Scintillation Vial

A scintillation vial is a small, light-compatible container used to hold radioactive samples and scintillation fluid for measuring ionizing radiation, making it important in laboratory medicine and biomedical research. In liquid scintillation counting, radiation from a sample transfers energy to molecules in the cocktail, producing brief flashes of light that photomultiplier detectors convert into measurable signals. Vial material, transparency, chemical compatibility, and secure sealing can affect counting efficiency and sample handling. These measurements support radiotracer studies, clinical assay development, pharmacokinetics, metabolic research, and the detection or quantification of low-energy beta-emitting compounds.

2016

Phosphoinositides are signaling lipids whose relative abundance rapidly changes in response to various stimuli. This article describes a method to measure the abundance of phosphoinositides by metabolically labeling cells with 3H-myo-inositol, followed by extraction and deacylation. Extracted glycero-inositides are then separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and quantified by flow scintillation.

Substrate Oxidation Assay in Cultured Cells: An In Vitro Assay to Quantify Substrate Oxidation in Cells by Measuring Radioactive Signals from Trapped CO2

2025

This video demonstrates a quantification technique for CO2 released during substrate oxidation using 14C-radiolabeled substrates. The released 14CO2 is trapped in an alkaline solution and quantified by a scintillation counter. The oxidation of different substrates varies between tissues and reflects the pathophysiological condition of the tissue.

DNA Synthesis Assay: A Technique to Assess DNA Synthesis in Proliferating Cells Using Radioactive Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation

2016

This paper describes a method for the measurement of fuel oxidation in Drosophila melanogaster in which trace amounts of specific radiolabeled metabolic substrates are fed to flies. The exhaled radiolabeled CO2 that is a produced from fuel oxidation is collected and measured.

Radiolabeled Amino Acid Uptake Assay to Quantify Cellular Uptake of Amino Acids

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.
