Surgical Evacuation

Surgical evacuation is the operative removal of blood, pus, fluid, tissue, or other material from a body cavity or affected site to relieve pressure, control infection, or prevent complications. Depending on the condition, clinicians access the site through an incision or minimally invasive approach and remove its contents using suction, drainage, irrigation, curettage, or specialized instruments, while maintaining hemostasis and protecting nearby structures. In medicine, surgical evacuation may treat hematomas, abscesses, obstructed spaces, or retained tissue when conservative management is inadequate. Timely evacuation can restore normal anatomy and function, reduce tissue injury, and guide further diagnostic or definitive treatment.
