Ultrasound Image Acquisition

Ultrasound image acquisition is the process of creating diagnostic images from high-frequency sound waves, providing a nonionizing way to visualize internal anatomy in medicine. A transducer sends sound pulses into the body and receives echoes as they reflect from tissue boundaries; coupling gel helps transmit sound, while the system converts echo timing and strength into a real-time image. Proper probe positioning, contact, orientation, and adjustment of imaging settings influence image quality and interpretation. This technique supports assessment of organs, blood flow, and developing fetuses, and its portability and lack of ionizing radiation make it valuable in bedside care, procedural guidance, and clinical research.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is an essential technique for screening for diaphragmatic dysfunction due to its portability, non-invasiveness, and real-time imaging capabilities. Although current diaphragmatic POCUS protocols exist, they suffer from poor interoperator reliability and lack consensus guidelines. Here we describe a technique that is reproducible and simple to perform.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) of the renal and genitourinary (renal-GU) system can help to screen for certain causes of kidney dysfunction. However, despite its clinical utility, renal-GU POCUS remains underutilized due to a lack of training among clinicians. To address this gap, this article describes renal-GU image acquisition and interpretation.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been shown to be useful in identifying patients with increased intracranial pressure (ICP). However, the non-standardized technique for this POCUS has hampered its use. We present a standardized image acquisition protocol for use in the acute care setting.
