Fixation Device

A fixation device is an apparatus that stabilizes tissue, an anatomical structure, or an experimental implant so researchers can perform procedures and collect measurements with minimal movement. In neuroscience, fixation devices use supports, clamps, frames, or holders to maintain a consistent position while limiting motion that could disrupt stereotaxic surgery, electrophysiological recordings, microscopy, or behavioral experiments. Proper fixation improves the accuracy and reproducibility of neural measurements, protects delicate samples and instruments, and helps researchers target specific brain regions. Device design and placement must balance firm stabilization with access to the tissue and avoidance of injury or interference with normal neural function.

Two basic types of preparation are used to visualize specimens with a light microscope: wet mounts and fixed specimens. The simplest type of preparation is the wet mount, in which the specimen is placed in a drop of liquid on the slide. A liquid specimen can be directly deposited on the slide using a dropper. Solid specimens, such as skin scraping, can be placed on the slide before adding a drop of liquid to prepare the wet mount. Sometimes the liquid is simply water, but stains are often added...
