Neuro Navigation

Neuro navigation is the study of how the nervous system represents location, direction, and movement to guide an organism through its environment. It relies on sensory cues, self-motion signals, and internal spatial maps, with hippocampal place cells and entorhinal grid cells supporting location coding and path integration. Research in neuroscience uses behavioral tasks, neural recording, and brain imaging to connect these mechanisms with learning, memory, and decision-making. Understanding neuro navigation can clarify how spatial cognition develops, explain impairments associated with neurological disease, and inform technologies such as biologically inspired navigation systems and brain-computer interfaces.

This article reports the development of a neuro-rehabilitation approach, "constraint-induced sound therapy (CIST)" for sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The aim of CIST is to prevent maladaptive cortical reorganization by using an enriched acoustic environment. CIST represents a safe, easy, inexpensive, and effective approach to treat sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.
