Prone Position Surgery

Prone position surgery is an operative approach in which a patient lies face down, providing access to posterior body structures while requiring careful protection of the airway, eyes, nerves, and pressure points. In neurosurgery, positioning systems stabilize the head and torso, maintain neutral alignment, and limit abdominal compression; these conditions improve exposure of posterior cranial or spinal structures while helping manage venous return and intracranial pressure. The approach supports procedures involving the posterior fossa, occipital region, and thoracic or lumbar spine, but its benefits must be balanced against pressure injury, hemodynamic disturbance, and airway complications.

COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak: How to perform complete prone positioning in COVID-Patients

2020

In pandemic times, medical staff is becoming a key resource in fighting the infection. To achieve the best medical care, relevant techniques and procedures have to be taught to medical staff while reducing the risk of infection. COVID-19 patients often develop an acute respiratory distress syndrome with respiratory failure. Prone positioning is established as a core component of management in COVID-19 patients, to enable ventilation of a greater lung area and thereby improve gas exchange. This...

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Presurgical planning,...

Robotized Testing of Camera Positions to Determine Ideal Configuration for Stereo 3D Visualization of Open-Heart Surgery

2021

The human depth perception of 3D stereo videos depends on the camera separation, point of convergence, distance to, and familiarity of the object. This paper presents a robotized method for rapid and reliable test data collection during live open-heart surgery to determine the ideal camera configuration.
