Stimulus Generation

Stimulus generation is the design and delivery of controlled sensory, electrical, or behavioral inputs used to evoke measurable responses in the nervous system. In neuroscience experiments, researchers specify parameters such as modality, intensity, timing, frequency, and duration, then use hardware or software to present stimuli reproducibly while recording neural or behavioral activity. Carefully calibrated stimulus generation enables researchers to test how neurons, circuits, and brain regions encode information, adapt to changing conditions, and produce behavior. It supports experiments involving visual, auditory, somatosensory, and cognitive processing while improving experimental control, comparability, and interpretation across studies.

Inducing Axonal Varicosities with a Micromechanical Stimulus on Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates the induction of axonal varicosities by applying micromechanical stimulus on neurons. The system comprises a micropipette attached to a syringe containing buffer via tubing. Using a micromanipulator, the micropipette is positioned above the neurons. Fluid pressure is then applied to induce varicosities in axons.

2012

The application of a classical fear conditioning behavioral paradigm for auditory prosthetic research in rats is described. This paradigm provides a mechanism for identifying both detection of, and discrimination between, distinct acoustic and electrical stimuli using heart-rate as an outcome measure.
