Desflurane

Desflurane is a volatile inhaled general anesthetic used to induce and maintain surgical unconsciousness, and its pharmacologic profile makes it important in perioperative care. It produces anesthesia by enhancing inhibitory signaling through ligand-gated ion channels, including GABA-A and glycine receptors, while reducing neuronal excitability. Its very low blood-gas solubility allows rapid changes in anesthetic depth and relatively fast emergence, supporting titratable maintenance during procedures. However, abrupt increases in concentration can irritate the airway and stimulate sympathetic responses, considerations that guide clinical selection, administration, and monitoring.

University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals ("The Guide") states that pain assessment and alleviation are integral components of the veterinary care of laboratory animals. The definition of anesthesia is the loss of feeling or sensation. It is a dynamic event involving changes in anesthetic depth with respect to an animal's metabolism, surgical stimulation, or variations in the...
