High-amplitude Propagating Contractions

High-amplitude propagating contractions are powerful, coordinated waves of smooth-muscle activity that travel along the colon to move luminal contents over substantial distances. They arise when sequential regions of the intestinal wall contract in an organized pattern, producing greater intraluminal pressure than routine colonic motor activity and helping propel fecal material toward the rectum. In pharmacology, these contractions provide an important functional endpoint for studying gastrointestinal motility and evaluating how drugs, receptors, neurotransmitters, or disease states alter colonic propulsion. Their measurement can therefore support research into constipation, diarrhea, bowel dysfunction, and motility-modifying therapies.

Muscle Contraction

In skeletal muscles, acetylcholine is released by nerve terminals at the motor end plate—the point of synaptic communication between motor neurons and muscle fibers. Binding of acetylcholine to its receptors on the sarcolemma allows entry of sodium ions into the cell and triggers an action potential in the muscle cell. Thus, electrical signals from the brain are transmitted to the muscle. Subsequently, the enzyme acetylcholinesterase breaks down acetylcholine to prevent excessive muscle...

2025

This video demonstrates assessing the muscle using cultured motor neurons, Schwann cells, and myotubes, followed by treatment with a neuromuscular blocker to inhibit contraction. Color-coded time-motion graphics show a color-coded time-motion graphic. Red indicates the fastest movement, and blue indicates the slowest.

Pulse amplitude and quality

Pulse amplitude is a crucial indicator of cardiac health because it provides valuable insights into the strength of left ventricular contractions and the overall uniformity of blood circulation within the vasculature. The strength of the pulse is directly related to the force with which the heart contracts and the volume of blood being pumped. A weak or absent pulse may indicate reduced cardiac output or poor left ventricular contraction, which can be signs of cardiovascular dysfunction or...
