Spinal Surgery Protocol

A spinal surgery protocol is a structured, evidence-based plan that coordinates patient assessment, medication management, operative care, and postoperative monitoring to support safe and consistent spinal procedures. In pharmacology, the protocol specifies how anesthetics, analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, and anticoagulants are selected, timed, dosed, and monitored according to surgical risks and patient factors. These medications act through distinct mechanisms, including suppression of pain signaling, reduction of inflammation, prevention of infection, and management of thromboembolic risk. Applying a coordinated protocol can improve pain control, reduce medication-related complications, and guide research into safer perioperative care for spinal surgery patients.

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) replacement strategies and gene-based therapy are considered for several retinal degenerative conditions. For clinical translation, large eye animal models are required to study surgical techniques applicable in patients. Here we present a rabbit model for subretinal surgery geared towards RPE transplantation, which is versatile and cost-efficient.

Slice cultures facilitate the manipulation of embryo development by gene and pharmacological perturbations. However, culture conditions must ensure that normal development can proceed within the reduced environment of the slice. We illustrate a protocol that facilitates normal spinal cord development to proceed for at least 24 hr.
