Vomiting Center

The vomiting center is a coordinated network in the medulla that integrates signals triggering nausea and emesis, making it a key target in pharmacology. It receives input from the gastrointestinal tract through vagal pathways, the vestibular system, higher brain regions, and the area postrema, where circulating toxins and medications can activate emetic responses; output then coordinates respiratory, abdominal, and esophageal muscles to produce vomiting. Antiemetic drugs act on this circuitry by blocking serotonin 5-HT3, dopamine D2, neurokinin-1, histamine H1, or muscarinic receptors. Understanding these pathways supports the rational treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea, motion sickness, postoperative vomiting, and drug-related emesis.

Pathophysiology of Vomiting

2024

Vomiting is a complex physiological response to expel harmful or irritating substances from the body. It's a defensive mechanism triggered by stimuli like poisons, microbial toxins, cytotoxic drugs, and mechanical abdominal distension. The process is centrally coordinated by the vomiting (or emetic) center located in the medulla of the brainstem. This area, rich in muscarinic M1, histamine H1, neurokinin 1 (NK1), and serotonin 5-HT3 receptors, coordinates the act of vomiting through interaction...

Lattice Centering and Coordination Number

The structure of a crystalline solid, whether a metal or not, is best described by considering its simplest repeating unit, which is referred to as its unit cell. The unit cell consists of lattice points that represent the locations of atoms or ions. The entire structure then consists of this unit cell repeating in three dimensions. The three different types of unit cells present in the cubic lattice are illustrated in Figure 1. Types of Unit Cells Imagine taking a large number of identical...

Center of Gravity

The center of gravity is the point at which an object's weight appears to be concentrated and can be used to balance the object perfectly. This point is essential in mechanics as it provides information regarding a body's stability and moments of inertia. The center of gravity does not always have to fall within the shape or boundaries of the body; it may also lie outside the body in certain cases. To determine its location, the principle of moments can be utilized by dividing the object into...

The center of mass is the point at which the total mass of an object can be said to be concentrated. It is a fundamental principle in mechanics and physics that applies to all objects regardless of their shape or size. The center of gravity is the point at which an object’s weight appears to be concentrated and can be used to balance the object perfectly. The knowledge of the center of mass can also help us to describe and predict the motion of objects. For example, when a ball is thrown into...

Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting: Cannabinoids

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a phytocannabinoid that primarily interacts with the CB1 receptor, a type of G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) predominantly in and around the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) and emetic center. THC also blocks the serotonin receptor activity in the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) by inhibiting serotonin release. THC exerts its anti-emetic effects through these interactions, which are beneficial for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Two synthetic agonists of THC,...
