Electrical Components

Electrical components are physical devices that control, generate, store, or transform electrical energy within a circuit, making them fundamental to physics and modern technology. Their behavior depends on how materials and structures respond to voltage, current, and changing electric or magnetic fields: resistors limit current, capacitors store charge in an electric field, inductors store energy in a magnetic field, and diodes regulate current direction. By combining these components, engineers can build circuits that amplify signals, filter frequencies, convert power, process information, and control electronic systems. Understanding their electrical properties and interactions supports applications ranging from laboratory experiments and sensors to communication devices, computers, and renewable-energy systems.

2023

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. The objective of this experiment is to achieve hands-on experience with different magnetic components from design and material perspectives. This experiment covers B-H curves of magnetic material and inductor design through identifying unknown design factors. The B-H curve of a magnetic element, such as an inductor or transformer, is a characteristic of the magnetic material forming the core around...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...

The light microscope is a basic tool for the cell biologist, who should have a thorough understanding of how it works, how it should be aligned for different applications, and how it should be maintained as required to obtain maximum image-forming capacity and resolution. The components of the microscope are described in detail here.

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...
