Object Size

Object size is the physical extent of an object, described by dimensions such as length, area, volume, or diameter, and is a fundamental quantity in physics because it influences how objects are measured and interact. It is determined by selecting a scale and measurement method, then comparing the object with a standard unit or resolving its boundaries through instruments such as rulers, microscopes, or imaging systems. Size comparisons help scientists model geometry, density, surface-area-to-volume relationships, and motion across scales, from particles to astronomical bodies, while careful attention to resolution and uncertainty ensures that reported dimensions are meaningful.

We describe a novel methodology for creating naturalistic 3-D objects and object categories with precisely defined feature variations. We use simulations of the biological processes of morphogenesis and phylogenesis to create novel, naturalistic virtual 3-D objects and object categories that can then be rendered as visual images or haptic objects.

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

2020

In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the $2,000...

Adjusting a Traverse

In the site survey of a four-sided traverse, internal angles are essential to ensure geometric accuracy. The survey revealed that the sum of the measured internal angles was 359 degrees and 48 minutes, which is 12 minutes less than the expected 360 degrees. This discrepancy signals an error likely arising from measurement inaccuracies during the fieldwork. To rectify this error, the adjustment process involved distributing the 12-minute shortfall equally across the four internal angles. By...

In accounting, a business's economic activities are segmented into designated time intervals, typically monthly, quarterly, or annually, known as accounting periods. This segmentation facilitates consistent tracking, summarization, and reporting of financial data, enabling stakeholders to accurately evaluate a company's performance and financial position. Companies must incorporate adjusting entries at the close of each period to ensure that financial reports conform to the accrual basis of...
