Potential Drop

Potential drop is the decrease in electric potential between two points, representing the energy transferred per unit charge as charge moves through an electric field or circuit element. It occurs when the electric field does work on charges, with the potential difference related to the field by ΔV = −∫E·dl and, in resistive components, to current and resistance through Ohm’s law, V = IR. Understanding potential drop helps explain how batteries drive current, how resistors dissipate electrical energy as heat, and how voltage measurements reveal the behavior of circuits and materials. It is fundamental to circuit analysis, electrical engineering, and experimental physics.

Excess Pressure Inside a Drop and a Bubble

2023

The shape of a small drop of liquid can be considered spherical, neglecting the effect of gravity. This drop can further be considered as two equal hemispherical drops put together due to surface tension. The forces acting on the spherical drop are due to the pressure of the liquid inside the drop, the pressure due to air outside the drop, and the force due to the surface tension acting on the two hemispherical drops. where γ corresponds to the surface tension. Recalling that the force per...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...
