Sacrificial Layer Casting

Sacrificial layer casting is a fabrication technique that creates hollow, suspended, or patterned structures by building a permanent material around a temporary layer and then removing the temporary material. The process typically involves depositing and shaping a sacrificial material, casting or coating a structural material over it, solidifying the structure, and selectively dissolving or etching the sacrificial layer without damaging the surrounding material. In physics and engineering, this approach enables controlled fabrication of microchannels, membranes, cavities, and three-dimensional architectures. It supports research in microfluidics, optical devices, materials science, and microelectromechanical systems by producing geometries that are difficult to form directly.
