Speech Development

Speech development is the progressive acquisition of the sounds, movements, and communication patterns used to produce spoken language, making it a central area of psychological and developmental study. It depends on coordinated growth in the brain, hearing, oral-motor control, and social learning as children perceive speech, practice vocalizations, and refine sound production through interaction and feedback. Researchers examine milestones such as babbling, first words, vocabulary growth, and increasing intelligibility to understand typical development and individual differences. This knowledge supports early identification of speech and language difficulties, guides clinical intervention, and informs research on cognition, learning, and social communication.

Navigated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a highly efficient non-invasive tool for mapping speech-related cortical areas. It helps in designing brain surgery and speeds up the direct cortical stimulation conducted during the surgery. This report describes how to perform speech cortical mapping reliably for preoperative evaluation and research.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.
