Unconscious States

Unconscious states are conditions in which awareness of oneself or the surrounding environment is substantially reduced or absent, making them central to psychology and the study of consciousness. They arise when brain systems that support arousal, attention, and the integration of information become disrupted or suppressed, as occurs during sleep, general anesthesia, coma, or some neurological disorders. Researchers examine behavioral responses, physiological signals, and brain activity to distinguish unconsciousness from reduced alertness and from unconscious mental processes that influence behavior without awareness. This work supports clinical assessment, improves understanding of sleep and cognition, and informs care for patients with disorders of consciousness.
