Default Mode Network

The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a set of interconnected brain regions that supports internally directed thought and helps organize mental activity when attention is not focused on an external task. It typically shows greater activity during rest, mind-wandering, autobiographical memory, and imagining the future, while its activity often decreases during demanding, externally oriented tasks. In psychology, studying the DMN through neuroimaging helps researchers examine self-related processing, social cognition, attention, and the coordination of large-scale brain networks. Its altered activity or connectivity is also investigated in conditions involving attention, mood, memory, and conscious experience.

This protocol describes the complementary neuroimaging techniques of resting state structural connectivity, task-induced deactivation, and structural connectivity analyses to examine the default network in post-traumatic stress disorder. The use of synergistic methods could potentially lead to improved diagnostics and assessments of severity, outcome, and other relevant clinical factors.

Surgical Protocol for a Large, Resealable Cranial Window Enabling Longitudinal, Multi-Modal Electrophysiology Recordings of Mouse Default Mode Network

What is a Mode?

2023

The mode is one of the commonly used measures of a central tendency. It is defined as the most frequent value in a data set. There can be more than one mode in a data set if multiple values have the same highest frequency. For instance, suppose that the Statistics exam scores of 20 students are: 50; 53; 59; 59; 63; 63; 72; 72; 72; 72; 72; 76; 78; 81; 83; 84; 84; 84; 90; 93. Here, the mode is 72, as it occurs most frequently, five times. A data set with two modes is called bimodal. For example,...
