Sociology is the systematic study of social life, relationships, institutions, and patterns of collective behavior, helping explain how societies are organized and change over time. In sociology, statistics turns observations about people and groups into measurable variables, supports sampling and survey design, and uses descriptive measures, probability, and inferential tests to estimate patterns while accounting for uncertainty. Researchers apply correlation and regression to examine associations among social factors, such as education, income, health, or inequality, without automatically establishing causation. These methods strengthen evidence-based analysis of social problems, evaluate policies and programs, and help distinguish broad population trends from experiences found in particular communities.
