Measuring Biodiversity

biodiversité. Le mot évoque la splendeur d’une grande forêt, ou la richesse foisonnante de l’océan, et est simplement défini comme la variété d’organismes dans un écosystème d’intérêt. Pour protéger la biodiversité, les scientifiques doivent être capables de la mesurer. Cela signifie déterminer combien d’espèces différentes vivent ensemble dans un espace particulier. Quel est le moyen le plus pratique de compter les espèces ? 

Il serait impossible d’essayer de tout compter dans un écosystème entier, c’est pourquoi les scientifiques utilisent un outil appelé quadrat, qui est un cadre de taille fixe placé au hasard dans l’environnement pour effectuer le comptage. Après avoir catalogué les espèces et les individus trouvés dans cette petite section, le processus est répété, en plaçant plus de quadrats au hasard, ou alternativement, à des positions fixes le long d’une ligne à travers l’environnement, appelée transect.

Afin d’estimer ensuite le nombre total d’espèces dans une zone, des courbes d’accumulation d’espèces sont utilisées. Si le nombre cumulatif d’espèces trouvées dans un quadrat est tracé en fonction du nombre de quadrats échantillonnés, une courbe émergera. Par exemple, dans cet ensemble de données, lorsque quatre quadrats ont été étudiés, il a été constaté qu’il y avait 10 espèces uniques. Six en contenaient 17 et ainsi de suite. L’asymptote de ce type de courbe représente une estimation du nombre d’espèces supportées par un environnement. Dans ce cas, il s'agit d'environ 30. Mais si la mesure de la diversité sur un seul site est incroyablement utile, la comparaison de sites sur une plus grande zone peut nous donner une indication encore plus grande de la diversité. 

En 1972, l’écologiste Robert Whittaker a décrit trois grands types de biodiversité, alpha, bêta et gamma. La diversité alpha fait simplement référence au nombre d’espèces dans une zone et est souvent appelée richesse en espèces. Par exemple, sur ce site, il y a sept espèces différentes, donc le score alpha est de sept. Un deuxième site, le site B, compte cinq espèces, et un troisième, le site C, en compte sept. Mais en comparant les sites, nous pouvons déterminer ce que l’on appelle la diversité bêta, la somme des espèces uniques à chaque zone. Donc, si nous comparons le site A avec le site B, nous voyons trois espèces en commun entre les deux. En comptant les espèces restantes, nous trouvons qu’il y en a six. Cela signifie qu’il existe une diversité bêta entre le site A et le site B de six. Les sites A et C ont également trois espèces en commun, ce qui en laisse huit uniques. Il s’agit d’une diversité bêta de huit. Les sites B et C ont deux espèces communes entre eux, soit une valeur de diversité bêta de huit. Enfin, la diversité gamma est le nombre d’espèces différentes dans tous les sites combinés. Dans cet exemple, il existe une diversité gamma de 12. Donc, pour résumer les trois types de biodiversité, nous pouvons les regarder de cette façon, alpha, bêta et gamma. En plus d’enregistrer la diversité, les scientifiques se réfèrent souvent à l’uniformité des espèces, c’est-à-dire au nombre d’individus de chaque type présents. Par exemple, ces deux sites ont la même richesse, ou diversité alpha, puisqu’ils comptent tous deux sept espèces. Mais le site A est relativement envahi par les lapins avec un faible nombre d’autres espèces, tandis que le site B a une distribution assez uniforme des espèces, de sorte qu’il est considéré comme ayant une plus grande uniformité par rapport au site A. Les scientifiques ont généralement considéré que les écosystèmes avec une richesse et une régularité plus élevées, c’est-à-dire de nombreuses espèces uniformément réparties, étaient les plus sains. Les habitats perturbés, souvent dus aux actions de l’homme, comme l’agriculture ou la pollution, ont souvent une richesse et une régularité médiocres. Il est essentiel de pouvoir comparer les sites, car cela permet aux chercheurs de déterminer la santé relative des écosystèmes. 
Dans ce laboratoire, vous effectuerez des échantillonnages par quadrat et transect sur trois sites environnementaux différents, ainsi qu’une simulation en laboratoire, puis analyserez les données recueillies pour décrire la biodiversité observée.

La diversité des écosystèmes est importante pour la santé de la planète et notre survie en tant qu’humains ; il est donc extrêmement important pour nous de comprendre et de mesurer la biodiversité, qui est définie comme la variabilité entre les organismes vivants d’un écosystème. La biodiversité peut être mesurée à de nombreux niveaux différents, notamment génétique, des espèces, des communautés et des écosystèmes. Une façon de mesurer la biodiversité est d’évaluer la richesse en espèces d’un écosystème, c’est-à-dire le nombre total d’espèces distinctes au sein d’une communauté locale. Bien que la présence de nombreuses espèces coïncide généralement avec un écosystème diversifié et sain, l’uniformité doit également être prise en compte. L’uniformité fait référence à l’égalité de la proportion de chaque espèce au sein d’une zone ou d’une communauté. Par exemple, lorsqu’une espèce domine la zone alors que les autres sont très rares, la biodiversité dans cette zone est plus faible que dans une zone où les espèces sont tout aussi abondantes. Par conséquent, les zones où vivent de nombreuses espèces dont l’abondance est relativement égale ont les valeurs de biodiversité les plus élevées.

<h4>Estimation de la biodiversité</h4>

Les différences de richesse et de régularité entre deux communautés peuvent être visualisées par des courbes rang-abondance. Si le nombre d’espèces est égal, la forme de la ligne peut nous dire quelle communauté est la plus diversifiée. Si la ligne est plate, il y a une grande uniformité entre les espèces. Cependant, si la ligne descend rapidement, la régularité est faible. Si la richesse et l’uniformité sont toutes deux différentes entre deux communautés, les biologistes doivent utiliser des équations pour calculer la diversité. Ces équations pondérent différemment l’importance de chaque composant, et un consensus sur l’équation la meilleure pour calculer la diversité est encore débattu.

Parfois, il y a trop d’espèces dans une zone qu’il est irréaliste de compter chaque espèce. Par exemple, un seul arbre de la forêt amazonienne peut contenir des centaines d’espèces de coléoptères. Pour contourner ce problème, les écologistes utilisent des outils d’échantillonnage appelés quadrats. Un quadrat est simplement un cadre avec une zone interne connue. Par exemple, pour mesurer la richesse spécifique d’un champ d’herbe d’un acre, les écologistes placent au hasard le quadrat dans le champ et comptent les espèces dans le quadrat, au lieu de compter toutes les espèces dans l’acre. Ils peuvent aussi échantillonner systématiquement à l’aide de bandes de transects. Les transects sont étirés à travers le champ, et les quadrats sont ensuite placés le long du transect à intervalles réguliers. Cette méthode est semi-aléatoire et assure une large couverture d’échantillonnage sur l’ensemble du terrain pour estimer sa biodiversité.

Alors que les quadrats et les transects peuvent attraper la plupart des espèces, certaines espèces rares peuvent passer inaperçues. Dans ce cas, les écologistes peuvent utiliser une courbe d’accumulation d’espèces, qui représente le nombre cumulatif d’espèces observées dans une série de quadrats. L’axe des y de la courbe représente le nombre total d’espèces observées, tandis que l’axe des x représente le nombre de quadrats pour lesquels les espèces ont été dénombrées. Le nombre total d’espèces dans le premier quadrat représente le premier point du graphique. Chaque point successif représente le nombre de nouvelles espèces trouvées dans chaque nouveau quadrat échantillonné, ainsi que toutes les espèces des quadrats précédents. À un moment donné, il y aura peu ou pas d’espèces supplémentaires trouvées dans chaque nouveau quadrat échantillonné, et la courbe se rapprochera d’une asymptote, qui est une estimation du nombre total d’espèces présentes. Même si l’asymptote n’est jamais atteinte en raison de nombreuses espèces rares, les biologistes peuvent estimer le nombre total sur la base de cette courbe.

Si des comparaisons doivent être faites entre différentes zones ou échelles, des mesures de diversité alpha, bêta et gamma sont utilisées. L’alpha-diversité (α) fait référence au nombre d’espèces dans une zone. La bêta-diversité (β) compare deux zones différentes et est la somme des espèces uniques à chaque zone. La gamma-diversité (γ) est le nombre d’espèces dans de nombreuses zones combinées en une région. En utilisant ces mesures, les biologistes peuvent se faire une idée de la diversité dans l’espace, y compris à petite et à grande échelle.

<h4>Menaces pour la biodiversité et leurs implications</h4>

La biodiversité du monde entier est menacée par la pollution, le changement climatique et les espèces envahissantes. L’une des principales raisons sous-jacentes des efforts de maintien de la biodiversité repose sur le fonctionnement de l’écosystème. Les écosystèmes sont constitués de nombreuses parties actives, notamment les producteurs primaires, les herbivores, les carnivores et les détritivores, qui contribuent tous au fonctionnement de l’écosystème. Si des espèces disparaissent, l’écosystème peut s’effondrer. Et si l’écosystème s’effondre, les services qu’il fournit aux humains le feront aussi. Les récifs coralliens tropicaux sont un bon exemple de ce concept1. Les pics de température de l’eau font perdre aux coraux leurs cellules d’algues symbiotiques. Sans les algues, les coraux commencent à mourir de faim, à mourir, puis à se dégrader et à perdre leur structure. Lorsque les coraux se décomposent, ils ne fournissent plus de couverture aux poissons et l’abondance des espèces de poissons diminue, ce qui affecte à son tour les pêcheurs locaux et les personnes qui dépendent du poisson pour se nourrir. Au fil du temps, les récifs coralliens morts se dégradent à plus grande échelle et ne constituent plus un tampon pour les côtes adjacentes, ce qui finit par éroder la côte et détruire les îles. Une communauté très diversifiée est moins susceptible de s’effondrer en raison de la redondance fonctionnelle2. Par exemple, la sensibilité des coraux aux températures élevées peut varier. Si un corail est extrêmement sensible à la température, un autre peut prendre sa place dans la communauté, mais s’il n’y a que quelques espèces, il est moins probable qu’un tel substitut soit disponible.

Un nombre important de médicaments dont nous bénéficions sont le résultat direct de la diversité de la vie. Les médicaments que nous synthétisons aujourd’hui étaient autrefois isolés d’animaux, de plantes, de champignons et de bactéries. Il existe toute une industrie consacrée à la découverte de nouveaux médicaments potentiels en analysant diverses espèces pour détecter la présence de composés bioactifs. Par exemple, les plantes produisent des produits chimiques pour se défendre contre les infections et les herbivores. Les araignées et les serpents produisent des venins divers. Les deux classes d’organismes ont été à l’origine de médicaments importants, comme le Taxol de l’if, qui traite les cancers du sein, du poumon et de l’ovaire, ou l’Ohanin du venin du roi Cobra, qui est un analgésique3-4. Chaque espèce qui disparaît peut détenir la clé de la guérison de maladies actuellement incurables. Plus vite nous perdons ces espèces, moins nous avons de chances de découvrir des solutions.

Une fois qu’une espèce s’est éteinte, nous ne pourrons jamais en faire l’expérience. Ce type de pensée a conduit à la conservation des pandas, des loutres de mer et d’autres animaux charismatiques. Ces espèces sont dites phares, et leur conservation peut se traduire par la protection de la biodiversité. Même si ces animaux ne représentent qu’une petite partie de l’ensemble de l’écosystème, les préserver signifie préserver l’écosystème qu’ils occupent. Les efforts déployés pour sauver la loutre de mer sur la côte ouest de l’Amérique du Nord ont abouti à la création de forêts de varech saines abritant plusieurs milliers d’autres espèces5. Sans la protection des loutres de mer, les herbivores comme les oursins, qui sont généralement mangés par les loutres, sont capables de dévorer complètement les forêts de varech, laissant des rochers stériles où très peu d’espèces pourraient survivre.

Biodiversity matters because it helps keep ecosystems healthy and stable. Biodiversity is the variety of living organisms in an ecosystem, and it can be measured at the genetic, species, community, and ecosystem levels. Ecologists often focus on species richness, which is the total number of different species in a local community. They also consider evenness, which describes how similar the abundances of those species are.

A community with many species is not always the most diverse if one species dominates. When species are more evenly distributed, biodiversity is higher than in a community where rare species make up only a small part of the total. Biologists can compare communities with rank-abundance curves. A flat curve shows high evenness, while a curve that drops quickly shows low evenness. If richness and evenness both differ, ecologists use equations to calculate diversity, although there is still debate about which equation works best.

Counting every organism is often impossible. A single tree in the Amazon Rainforest may hold hundreds of beetle species. To estimate biodiversity, ecologists use quadrats, which are frames with a known area. They place quadrats randomly in a field or along transects, which are tapes stretched across an area so samples can be taken at regular intervals. This approach helps cover the site while making the survey practical.

Even with quadrats and transects, rare species can be missed. Ecologists use species accumulation curves to track the total number of species found as more quadrats are sampled. The curve rises as new species appear and eventually approaches an asymptote, which gives an estimate of the total number of species in the area. If the asymptote is not fully reached, scientists can still estimate how many species are likely present.

Biologists also compare diversity across space with alpha, beta, and gamma diversity. Alpha-diversity is the number of species in one area. Beta-diversity compares two areas and includes the species unique to each one. Gamma-diversity measures the number of species across many areas in a region. Together, these measures show diversity at small and large scales.

Biodiversity is threatened by pollution, climate change, and invasive species. Ecosystems depend on many working parts, including primary producers, herbivores, carnivores, and detritivores. If species are lost, the ecosystem can collapse, and the services it provides to people can disappear too. Coral reefs show this clearly. When water temperatures rise, corals lose their symbiotic algae cells, then starve, die, and lose their structure. Fish lose cover, fish numbers decline, fishermen are affected, and damaged reefs can no longer protect coastlines from erosion.

High biodiversity can make a community more resistant to collapse because of functional redundancy. If one coral species is very sensitive to heat, another may be able to fill its role. With only a few species, that backup is less likely. Biodiversity also supports medicine. Many medicines were first isolated from animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria. Scientists continue to search species for bioactive compounds, such as Taxol from yew trees for cancer treatment and Ohanin from king cobra venom as a painkiller. Each extinct species may remove a possible source of future cures.

Conservation often focuses on flagship species such as pandas and sea otters. Protecting these animals can also protect the ecosystems they live in. On the West Coast of North America, efforts to save sea otters helped keep kelp forests healthy and full of many other species. Without otters, sea urchins can overgraze kelp forests and leave barren rocks with very few species able to survive.
