- Des caractéristiques comme la taillene sont pas seulement influencées par plusieurs gènes,qui constituent l'influence de la nature, l'inné,mais aussi par divers facteurs environnementaux,qui constituent l'influence de la culture, l'acquis. 
Par exemple, une mauvaise alimentation dans l'enfance,comme un manque de protéines, peut empêcher la croissanceet rendre un individu plus petit à l'âge adultequ'il ne l'aurait été avec une meilleure alimentation. 
Chose intéressante, l'amélioration de l'alimentationa probablement contribuéà l'augmentation progressive de la taille moyennedepuis le début du XXème siècle. 
Cette tendance est particulièrement évidentedans certaines régions des Amériques, d'Europe et d'Asie. 
Cependant, il existe aussi des preuvesque l'environnement émotionnel d'un enfant,comme le stress chronique ou un manque de socialisation,interfère avec les niveaux d'hormones de croissance,les faisant diminuer, et faisant donc diminuer la taille. 
C'est donc parfois le jeu entre la nature et la culturequi dicte l'apparence finale d'un phénotype,comme la taille d'une personne,et même le fait qu'elle développe plus tard un cancerou une maladie cardiaque.

 <h4>L’influence de la nutrition sur la hauteur</h4>
 
 Des centaines de gènes qui influencent la taille chez l’homme ont été identifiés. Une étude a révélé que le facteur le plus important expliquant les différences actuelles de stature chez les hommes dans différentes nations était le rapport entre la consommation de protéines animales de haute qualité et de protéines de faible qualité provenant des céréales et des légumes pendant l’enfance.
 
 On pense que les hommes préhistoriques les plus grands étaient des chasseurs du paléolithique supérieur de la culture Gravettien, qui ont prospéré en Europe il y a 34 000 à 26 000 ans. Leur stature (allant de 1,78 m à 1,88 m) était due en partie à une faible densité de population et à un régime alimentaire abondant en protéines animales de haute qualité.  <h4>L’impact du stress sur la stature</h4>
 
 La croissance physique est métaboliquement exigeante et elle est inhibée par le stress, en partie par l’axe hypothalamique-hypophyso-surrénalien. Par exemple, l’hormone de sécrétion de corticotropine (CRH) stimule la synthèse de l’hormone adrénocorticotrope (ACTH), qui induit la sécrétion de glucocorticoïdes (par exemple le cortisol, “ l'hormone du stress ”). Le cortisol stimule l’appétit mais réduit la production d’IGF-1 du foie, qui est également nécessaire pour la croissance et le développement des os. En outre, un excès de glucocorticoïdes augmente la sécrétion de somatostatine, ce qui inhibe la sécrétion de l’hormone de croissance.
 
 Chez les enfants, il a été démontré que le stress chronique inhibe la croissance osseuse et la prise de poids, qui peuvent reprendre lorsque le stress est réduit ou éliminé. En outre, lorsque les enfants sont élevés dans des conditions socialement stressantes, où trop d’enfants partagent trop peu de ressources, et que les besoins physiques et émotionnels ne sont pas satisfaits, les enfants peuvent également connaître un retard de croissance. Cela est évident chez les enfants institutionnalisés qui n’établissent pas de relations solides et cohérentes avec leurs aidants. Par conséquent, le stress, la réduction de l’hormone de croissance provoquée de façon psychosociologique et une nutrition inadéquate peuvent tous freiner la stature.

Genes and environment both shape human height and other traits. Genes are the inherited instructions we get from our parents. Environment includes factors such as diet, stress, and social conditions. Many phenotypes, or observable traits, reflect both influences. Some also show up later in life, including cancer and other diseases.

Height is a clear example of this interaction. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of height variation comes from genetic differences among people. The remaining 10-30% comes from environmental differences, such as diet. Hundreds of genes linked to height have been identified in humans.

Nutrition can strongly affect how tall a person grows during childhood. One study found that the biggest factor in stature differences among men in different nations was the balance between high-quality animal protein and lower-quality protein from grains and vegetables. Early Upper Paleolithic hunters from the Gravettian culture were among the tallest known men. They lived in Europe 34,000 to 26,000 years ago. Their height, from about 5'10&quot; to 6'2&quot;, was helped by a low population density and a diet rich in high-quality animal protein. In modern times, greater height is linked to improved nutrition and social conditions.

Stress can also limit growth. Physical growth uses a lot of energy, and stress can slow it down through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. In this pathway, corticotropin-releasing hormone, or CRH, stimulates adrenocorticotropic hormone, or ACTH. ACTH leads to the release of glucocorticoids such as cortisol, the main stress hormone. Cortisol can reduce the liver’s production of IGF-1, a factor needed for bone growth, and too much glucocorticoid can increase somatostatin, which lowers growth hormone release.

Chronic stress in children can reduce bone growth and weight gain, and these changes may improve when stress is reduced. Growth delay can also appear when children live in socially stressful settings with too many children sharing too few resources and with unmet physical and emotional needs. This is seen in institutionalized children who do not form strong, steady relationships with caregivers. Overall, genes and environment work together to shape final traits, including features that may develop much later in life.
