- En respiration cellulaire,le rendement de 30-32 molécules d'ATP est le résultatde la production par étapes de molécules à haute énergie,deux ATP et deux NADH en glycolyse,deux NADH dans l'oxydation du pyruvatedeux ATP, six NADH et deux FADH2dans le cycle de l'acide citriqueet environ 26 ou 28 ATPen phosphorylation oxydante. 
Cette fourchette d'ATP est approximative pour trois raisons. 
Premièrement, car les porteuses d'électrons NADH et FADH2produisent indirectement de l'ATP en faisant pomper des ionshydrogène dans l'espace intermembranaire,elles créent des fractions théoriques d'ATP,2,5 et 1,5 ATP respectivement. 
Deuxièmement, le NADH produit par glycolyse ne peutpas traverser la membrane mitochondriale,il doit donc transmettre ses électrons à haute énergie àd'autres porteurs d'électrons dans la mitochondrie. 
Et selon le type de cellule,produire du FADH2 ou du NADHavec un rendement de 1,5 ou 2,5 ATP chacun. 
Troisièmement, l'énergie produite par la respirationest également utilisée pour d'autres activités commele transport du pyruvate à travers la membranemitochondriale, ce qui donne environ 30 ou 32 ATP.

La respiration cellulaire produit 30 à 32 molécules d’ATP par molécule de glucose. Bien que la plupart de l’ATP provient de la phosphorylation oxydative et la chaîne de transport d’électrons (ETC), 4 ATP sont gagnés à l’avance (2 de la glycolyse et 2 du cycle de l’acide citrique).
 
 L’ETC est intégré dans la membrane mitochondriale interne et comprend quatre complexes protéiques principaux et une ATP synthase. Le NADH et le FADH2 transmettent des électrons à ces complexes, qui à leur tour pompent les protons dans l’espace intermembranaire. Cette distribution de protons génère un gradient de concentration à travers la membrane. Le gradient entraîne la production d’ATP lorsque les protons reviennent dans la matrice mitochondriale via l’ATP synthase.
 
 Pour chaque 2 électrons apportés que le NADH passe dans le complexe I, les complexes I et III pompent chacun 4 protons, et le complexe IV pompe 2 protons, soit un total de 10 protons. Le complexe II n’est pas impliqué dans la chaîne d’électrons initiée par le NADH. Le FADH2, cependant, passe 2 électrons au complexe II, de sorte qu’un total de 6 protons sont pompés par FADH2 ; 4 protons via les complexes III et 2 via le complexe IV.
 
 Quatre protons sont nécessaires pour synthétiser 1 ATP. Puisque 10 protons sont pompés pour chaque NADH, 1 NADH donne 2,5 (10/4) ATP. Six protons sont pompés pour chaque FADH2, donc 1 FADH2 donne 1,5 (6/4) ATP.
 
 La respiration cellulaire produit un maximum de 10 NADH et 2 FADH2 par molécule de glucose. Comme un seul NADH produit 2,5 ATP et un seul FADH2 produit 1,5 ATP, il s’ensuit que 25 ATP + 3 ATP sont produits par phosphorylation oxydative. Quatre ATP sont produits avant la phosphorylation oxydative, ce qui donne un maximum de 32 ATP par molécule de glucose.
 
 Fait important, la glycolyse se produit dans le cytosol et l’ETC est situé dans les mitochondries (dans les eucaryotes). La membrane mitochondriale n’est pas perméable au NADH, donc les électrons des 2 NADH qui sont produits par glycolyse doivent être transportés dans les mitochondries. Une fois à l’intérieur de la mitochondrie, les électrons peuvent être transmis au NAD+ ou FAD. Compte tenu des différences de rendement en ATP selon le transporteur d'électrons, le rendement total de la respiration cellulaire est de 30 à 32 ATP par molécule de glucose.

Cellular respiration makes ATP from glucose in several stages. The process usually produces 30 to 32 ATP per glucose molecule. Most of that ATP comes from oxidative phosphorylation and the electron transport chain, while 4 ATP are made earlier, with 2 from glycolysis and 2 from the citric acid cycle.

The electron transport chain, or ETC, sits in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It has four main protein complexes and ATP synthase, the enzyme that makes ATP. NADH and FADH2 deliver electrons to these complexes. As electrons move through the chain, the complexes pump protons into the intermembrane space and build a gradient across the membrane.

That proton gradient powers ATP production. Protons flow back into the mitochondrial matrix through ATP synthase, and this flow drives ATP formation. For every 2 electrons that NADH sends through complex I, 10 protons are pumped in total. Complex I and complex III each pump 4 protons, and complex IV pumps 2 protons. Complex II is not part of the electron chain started by NADH.

FADH2 follows a different path. It passes 2 electrons to complex II, so a total of 6 protons are pumped per FADH2. In this case, complex III pumps 4 protons and complex IV pumps 2 protons. Four protons are needed to make 1 ATP. That means 1 NADH yields 2.5 ATP, and 1 FADH2 yields 1.5 ATP.

Per glucose molecule, cellular respiration can produce up to 10 NADH and 2 FADH2. Since each NADH makes 2.5 ATP and each FADH2 makes 1.5 ATP, oxidative phosphorylation produces 25 ATP from NADH and 3 ATP from FADH2. Adding the 4 ATP made before that stage gives a maximum of 32 ATP per glucose molecule. In eukaryotes, glycolysis happens in the cytosol, and the ETC is in the mitochondria.

The mitochondrial membrane does not let NADH cross. Because of that, the electrons from the 2 NADH made in glycolysis must be shuttled into the mitochondria. Once inside, those electrons may be passed to NAD+ or FAD. Since the shuttle path can change the carrier used, the total ATP yield of cellular respiration is usually 30 to 32 ATP per glucose molecule.
