L’élimination de la chape, tout comme l’élimination de Hofmann, produit l’alcène moins substitué comme produit principal en éliminant la N,N-diméthylhydroxylamine d’un oxyde d’amine au lieu d’une amine tertiaire d’un sel d’ammonium quaternaire.
L’oxyde d’amine est formé à partir de l’oxydation d’une amine tertiaire par le peroxyde d’hydrogène.
La charge positive complète de l’atome d’azote favorise l’élimination de Cope, qui est un processus d’élimination concerté qui suit la stéréochimie syn dans des conditions thermiques.
L’oxyde d’amine extrait par voie intramoléculaire le proton β moins entravé, suivi d’un flux cyclique d’électrons qui conduit finalement à la perte du groupe partant et à la formation de l’alcène moins substitué.
Les atomes participants impliqués dans l’état de transition ont une disposition presque plane, avec le β hydrogène et le groupe partant orientés de manière syn.
L’élimination de la chape, contrairement à l’élimination de Hofmann, ne nécessite pas de base externe car l’oxyde d’amine fonctionne comme base dans la réaction.

Le mécanisme de la réaction est illustré sur la figure 2. Ici, l'oxydation des amines tertiaires par le peroxyde d'hydrogène produit de l'oxyde d'amine. The Cope elimination reaction converts tertiary amines into alkenes. It uses hydrogen peroxide and heat. The process starts with oxidation of the tertiary amine to form an amine oxide.

The amine oxide then acts as a base during the elimination step. The reaction follows syn stereochemistry, which means the groups leave from the same side. It also proceeds through a cyclic transition state. The N,N-dimethyl hydroxylamine group is formed as the leaving group.

The major product is usually the less substituted alkene. Cope elimination is useful when reactive or sensitive alkenes are needed. It is valued because it takes place under mild conditions.
