Les amines sont des dérivés organiques d’un composé inorganique, l’ammoniac, avec un ou plusieurs hydrogènes remplacés par des groupes alkyle ou aryle.
Elles sont classées en amines primaires, secondaires ou tertiaires en fonction du degré de substitution au niveau de l’atome d’azote.
Si l’atome d’azote est lié à un ou plusieurs carbones alkyles, l’amine est classée comme une amine aliphatique. Si l’un des carbones liés fait partie d’un groupe aryle, l’amine est une amine aromatique.
Les amines dans lesquelles l’azote fait partie d’une structure cyclique sont appelées amines hétérocycliques. Si le cycle est aromatique, ces amines sont classées comme amines aromatiques hétérocycliques.
L’atome d’azote peut également porter quatre groupes organyles. De telles amines portent une charge positive formelle et existent sous forme de sels d’ammonium quaternaire.
Les amines sont largement présentes dans la nature et ont divers effets physiologiques. Par exemple, la cocaïne, une amine tertiaire obtenue à partir de feuilles de coca, est un stimulant du système nerveux central.

Les amines sont des dérivés organiques de l'ammoniac. Ils sont formés en remplaçant un ou plusieurs protons d'ammoniac par des groupes alkyle ou aryle. Selon le nombre de groupes organyle liés à l'azote, les amines sont classées comme primaires, secondaires ou tertiaires. Les amines primaires ont un groupe organyle attaché à l'atome d'azote, tandis que les amines secondaires et tertiaires ont respectivement deux et trois groupes organyle attachés à l'atome d'azote.

Les amines sont également classées comme amines aliphatiques et aromatiques. Une amine est aliphatique lorsque seuls des groupes alkyle sont liés à l'atome d'azote. Dans une amine aromatique, au moins un groupe aryle est lié à l'atome d'azote. Si l’atome d’azote fait partie d’un cycle, ces amines sont classées comme amines hétérocycliques. De plus, si l'azote est un hétéroatome dans un cycle aliphatique, ces amines sont classées comme amines aliphatiques hétérocycliques. De la même manière, une amine est classée comme amine aromatique hétérocyclique si l'azote fait partie du cycle aromatique.

Les molécules d'origine végétale contenant de l'azote sont appelées alcaloïdes. La plupart d’entre eux sont physiologiquement actifs dans le corps humain. Par exemple, l’ingestion de coniine, une amine aliphatique hétérocyclique, peut entraîner des problèmes respiratoires, une faiblesse ou la mort dans les cas graves. Amines are organic derivatives of ammonia. They form when one or more ammonia protons are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups. Chemists sort amines by the number of organyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom.

Primary amines have one organyl group on nitrogen. Secondary amines have two, and tertiary amines have three. If a fourth organyl group is present, the nitrogen carries a formal positive charge. These compounds are called quaternary ammonium salts.

Amines are also grouped as aliphatic or aromatic. An amine is aliphatic when only alkyl groups are bonded to the nitrogen atom. In an aromatic amine, at least one aryl group is bonded to nitrogen. If the nitrogen atom is part of a ring, the amine is classified as a heterocyclic amine.

Some heterocyclic amines are further divided by the type of ring they belong to. If nitrogen is the heteroatom in an aliphatic ring, the compound is a heterocyclic aliphatic amine. If nitrogen is part of an aromatic ring, it is a heterocyclic aromatic amine.

Many nitrogen-containing molecules from plants are called alkaloids. Most of these are physiologically active in the human body. Coniine is one example of a heterocyclic aliphatic amine, and ingestion can cause respiratory issues, weakness, or death in severe cases. Cocaine is a tertiary amine from coca plant leaves, and it stimulates the central nervous system when consumed.
