Anatomical Terminology

La terminologie anatomique standard est universellement utilisée pour étudier la structure et l'organisation interne du corps humain.
Ces termes ont souvent des racines, des préfixes ou des suffixes dérivés du grec ou du latin. La racine est la partie centrale du mot qui peut faire référence à un organe, un tissu ou une condition. 
Par exemple, la racine gastro-fait référence à l’estomac. L’ajout de epi, c’est-à-dire au-dessus, comme préfixe avant la racine crée le terme épigastrique, qui décrit l’emplacement au-dessus de l’estomac.
Le suffixe qu’il est fait référence à l’inflammation. Le relier à la racine arthro-, c’est-à-dire articulations, forme le terme arthrite. De même, la bronchite et la gastrite désignent respectivement une inflammation d’une partie des poumons et de l’estomac.
De même, pour comprendre les directions anatomiques, les anatomistes utilisent la position de référence anatomique standard. Par exemple, lorsqu’une personne se tient debout face à l’avant, l’avant du corps est appelé la face antérieure ou ventrale, et l’arrière est la face postérieure ou dorsale.
Ainsi, le cœur est antérieur à la colonne vertébrale et postérieur au sternum.

La connaissance de l'anatomie est essentielle pour comprendre la biologie humaine et la médecine. Les anatomistes et les professionnels de la santé utilisent une terminologie standard pour décrire le corps humain avec plus de précision et sans ambiguïté. Les termes anatomiques ont principalement des racines dérivées du grec et du latin. Étant donné que ces langues sont rarement utilisées dans la conversation, le sens des mots reste le même. Chaque terme est composé d'une racine entre les préfixes et les suffixes. La racine d'un terme fait généralement référence à un organe, un tissu ou une condition, tandis que le préfixe ou le suffixe décrit souvent la racine. Par exemple, dans le trouble de l'hypertension, le préfixe « hyper- » signifie « élevé » ou « supérieur » et le mot racine « tension » fait référence à la pression, donc le mot « hypertension » fait référence à une pression sanguine anormalement élevée. 

 Les anatomistes standardisent leur visualisation du corps. La position de référence anatomique standard est debout avec les pieds parallèles, les épaules larges et les orteils dirigés vers l'avant. Les membres supérieurs sont tenus de chaque côté et les paumes des mains font face devant. En suivant la position de référence anatomique standard pour localiser ou se référer à une partie du corps, on minimise la confusion, surtout lors des examens et des procédures de routine. Par exemple, une cicatrice située sur le carpe se trouve du côté de la paume du poignet. En ce qui concerne l'orientation, le corps allongé est décrit soit comme étant en position ventrale (face contre terre), soit en position dorsale (face vers le haut). 

 De plus, les régions du corps humain possèdent des termes spécifiques pour indiquer la localisation, le nombre ou la couleur d'une structure, d'un organe ou d'un tissu particulier. Par exemple, le terme « brachium » fait référence à « l'avant-bras », tandis que « antebrachium » ou « avant-bras » est utilisé plutôt que « bras inférieur ». Les termes deviennent essentiels pour décrire les positions relatives de différentes structures corporelles. Par exemple, les termes « supérieur » et « inférieur » sont souvent utilisés pour décrire la position de la tête par rapport à la partie inférieure du corps. 

 Bref historique 

 La « Terminologia Anatomica » (TA) est la norme internationale en matière de terminologie anatomique humaine utilisée dans le monde entier. Le Comité fédératif de terminologie anatomique et la Fédération internationale des associations d'anatomistes l'ont développée et publiée en 1998. Elle a remplacé la norme précédente, le « Nomina Anatomica ». La « Terminologia Histologica » (TH) est un texte complémentaire de la TA développé par le Comité international fédératif de terminologie anatomique (FICAT) rebaptisé, qui a été publié en 2008. La TA contient la terminologie relative à environ 7500 structures anatomiques humaines à l'échelle macroscopique, tandis que la TH contient la terminologie relative aux structures cellulaires, aux tissus et aux organes à l'échelle microscopique.

Anatomical terms help describe the human body clearly in biology and medicine. Health care professionals and anatomists use this standard language to avoid confusion and to make descriptions more precise. Most anatomical words come from Greek and Latin roots, and these roots usually stay the same because the languages are rarely used in everyday conversation.

Many anatomical words are built from a root plus a prefix or suffix. The root often names an organ, tissue, or condition. The prefix or suffix then changes the meaning of that root. For example, in hypertension, the prefix &quot;hyper-&quot; means high or over, and the root &quot;tension&quot; refers to pressure. Together, the word means abnormally high blood pressure.

Anatomists also use a standard anatomical reference position to describe the body. In this position, a person stands upright with parallel feet, shoulders wide, toes forward, and the arms at the sides. The palms face ahead. Using this common position helps people locate body parts with less confusion during exams and procedures.

Orientation terms also matter when describing body position. A body lying face down is called prone, and a body lying face up is called supine. Location terms are used for specific regions as well. For example, brachium means upper arm, and antebrachium means forearm rather than lower arm. A scar on the carpal is on the palm side of the wrist, and terms such as superior and inferior help compare the head with the lower part of the body.

These terms are part of international standards used worldwide. Terminologia Anatomica, or TA, was developed by the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology and the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists and released in 1998. It replaced Nomina Anatomica. A related reference, Terminologia Histologica, or TH, was published in 2008 by the renamed Federative International Committee on Anatomical Terminology. TA covers about 7,500 gross anatomical structures, while TH covers cellular structures, tissue, and organs at the microscopic level.
