Les stratégies de titrage comprennent le titrage direct, où un titrant réagit avec un analyte jusqu’à ce qu’il atteigne le point final.
D’autres stratégies sont utilisées si la réaction est lente ou s’il n’y a pas de réaction de titrage directe.
Le titrage inverse consiste à déterminer l’excès d’une solution étalon utilisée pour consommer un analyte en titrant avec une deuxième solution étalon.
Si l’analyte déplace un groupe d’un complexe, la quantité de groupe déplacé est déterminée à l’aide du titrage de déplacement.

Les titrages volumétriques consistent à mesurer le volume d'un titrant de concentration connue qui est nécessaire pour réagir complètement avec un analyte. Dans les titrages gravimétriques, la solution étalon réagit avec l'analyte pour former un précipité insoluble, qui est filtré, séché et pesé. Dans les titrages coulométriques, un courant est appliqué à une réaction électrochimique jusqu'à ce que la réaction soit terminée, et la charge requise pour cette réaction est calculée pour aider à déterminer la quantité ou la concentration du ou des réactifs.

Généralement, lors des titrages, un titrant avec une concentration connue est ajouté à l'analyte jusqu'à ce que l'analyte soit consommé, c'est-à-dire lorsque le point final est atteint. Dans ce cas, le processus est appelé titrage direct. Dans certains cas, la réaction peut être trop lente pour obtenir un point final précis. Dans de tels cas, un titrage en retour est utilisé. Lors d'un titrage en retour, l'analyte peut réagir avec une quantité excédentaire d'une solution étalon, et la quantité restante de cette solution étalon est titrée avec une seconde solution étalon. Parfois, aucun indicateur approprié ne peut être trouvé pour un titrage direct ou indirect (rétro). Dans ce cas, un titrage par déplacement peut être utilisé, dans lequel l'analyte déplace un réactif, généralement issu d'un complexe, et le réactif déplacé est mesuré par titrage.

Titrimetric methods use a standard solution to measure the amount of an analyte in chemistry. The main categories are volumetric, gravimetric, and coulometric methods. Each one reaches the endpoint in a different way.

In volumetric titrations, the key measurement is the volume of a titrant with a known concentration. The titrant is added until it reacts completely with the analyte. In gravimetric titrations, the standard solution forms an insoluble precipitate with the analyte. That solid is then filtered, dried, and weighed.

Coulometric titrations use electric current instead of measuring a liquid volume. Current is applied to drive an electrochemical reaction until it is complete. The charge needed for that reaction is then calculated to determine the amount or concentration of the reactant.

Most titrations stop when the analyte is used up at the endpoint, and this is called direct titration. If the reaction is too slow to give a sharp endpoint, back titration is used. In back titration, the analyte reacts with an excess of a standard solution, and the leftover amount is titrated with a second standard solution.

Sometimes neither direct titration nor back titration works well because no suitable indicator is available. In that case, displacement titration can be used. The analyte displaces a reagent, usually from a complex, and the displaced reagent is then measured by titration.
