L’analyse titrimétrique est classée en quatre catégories principales en fonction du type de réactions impliquées.
La neutralisation ou titrage acide-base implique la réaction d’un proton avec un ion hydroxyde pour former une molécule d’eau.
En acidimétrie, un analyte basique est titré avec une solution étalon d’un acide fort.
En revanche, l’alcalinmétrie implique le titrage d’un analyte acide avec une solution étalon d’une base forte.
Dans les titrages redox, le nombre d’oxydation du titrant et de l’analyte change lorsque les électrons sont transférés de l’agent réducteur à l’agent oxydant. 
Dans les titrages complexométriques, le ligand de titrage réagit avec l’analyte d’ions métalliques, pour former un complexe métal-ligand.
Enfin, dans les titrages par précipitation, l’analyte et le titrant réagissent pour former un précipité.

L'analyse titrimétrique en chimie des solutions consiste à mesurer le volume des solutions et est souvent appelée analyse volumétrique. La solution étalon de concentration connue dans la burette est appelée titrant, tandis que la solution de concentration inconnue dans le flacon est appelée analyte ou titrand. Les analyses titrimétriques peuvent être classées en quatre types en fonction des réactions entre le titrant et l'analyte.

Les titrages entre un acide et une base conduisent à des réactions de neutralisation qui forment des molécules d'eau. C’est ce qu’on appelle un titrage acido-basique. Par exemple, le titrage d’une solution étalon d’hydroxyde de sodium avec l’acide chlorhydrique à analyser génère de l’eau, laissant derrière lui les ions sodium et chlorure acidement neutres. Dans le deuxième type d’analyse titrimétrique – les titrages complexométriques, les ions métalliques tels que l’argent et le mercure se réunissent avec des donneurs d’électrons tels que le cyanure et le chlorure pour former des complexes. Le troisième type est le titrage par précipitation, dans lequel le titrant réagit avec l’analyte pour former un produit insoluble. Par exemple, le titrage entre l’ion chlorure et la solution de nitrate d’argent produira le chlorure d’argent insoluble. Dans le dernier type d'analyse titrimétrique, les réactions d'oxydoréduction sont utilisées pour déterminer la quantité ou la concentration d'un analyte. Dans ce cas, les états d’oxydation du titrant et de l’analyte changent en raison du transfert d’électrons entre les deux. La solution étalon peut être un agent oxydant ou réducteur, et le point final peut être détecté avec des indicateurs ou des changements dans les signaux électriques.

Titrimetric analysis measures solution volume and is also called volumetric analysis. A standard solution with a known concentration is placed in the burette and is called the titrant. The solution with an unknown concentration in the flask is the analyte, or titrand.

Titrimetric analysis is grouped into four types based on the reaction between the titrant and the analyte. Acid-base titrations involve a neutralization reaction between an acid and a base. This reaction forms water molecules. For example, sodium hydroxide standard solution can be titrated with hydrochloric acid. The reaction produces water and leaves the sodium and chloride ions neutral.

Complexometric titrations are the second type. In these titrations, metal ions such as silver and mercury combine with electron donors such as cyanide and chloride to form complexes. Precipitation titrations are the third type. Here, the titrant reacts with the analyte to form an insoluble product. A chloride ion titrated with silver nitrate, for example, forms insoluble silver chloride.

Redox titrations are the fourth type of titrimetric analysis. They use oxidation-reduction reactions to find the amount or concentration of an analyte. During the reaction, electrons move between the titrant and the analyte, and their oxidation states change. The standard solution may act as an oxidizing agent or a reducing agent. The end point can be detected with indicators or by changes in electrical signals.
