Le classement des agrégats signifie la distribution granulométrique des particules au sein d’un échantillon d’agrégats.
Les agrégats bien classés contiennent toutes les fractions granulométriques requises dans les proportions nécessaires pour former une matrice dense avec un minimum de vides.
La courbe de gradation correspondante est une courbe lisse continue, indiquant une large gamme de tailles de particules.
Lorsque la majorité des agrégats passent par un tamis spécifique et sont retenus sur le tamis plus fin suivant, cela signifie que les particules sont principalement de la même taille.
Il s’agit d’agrégats gradués uniformes ou de taille unique, représentés par une ligne presque verticale sur la courbe de gradation.
Les agrégats sont classés par écart si à peu près les mêmes fractions d’agrégats passent deux tamis différents de tailles considérablement différentes, indiquant l’absence de granulats dans la gamme de taille intermédiaire et est représenté par une ligne horizontale sur la courbe de gradation.
En l’absence d’agrégats fins, le mélange est dit à grade ouvert, ce qui entraîne de grands vides entre les particules grossières. La courbe de gradation correspondante est plate et presque nulle dans la gamme des petites tailles.

La granulométrie des granulats est essentielle pour obtenir de manière économique un mélange de béton présentant une résistance adéquate, une ouvrabilité raisonnable et une ségrégation minimale. Il existe quatre types de granulométrie : bien calibré, uniformément (ou de taille unique), à ​​granulométrie discontinue et à granulométrie ouverte.


 Les granulats bien calibrés comprennent une gamme complète de fractions granulométriques nécessaires qui s'assemblent pour créer une matrice dense avec un minimum de vides, représentée par une courbe de granulométrie continue et lisse. Ce type de granulométrie assure une bonne ouvrabilité et une bonne stabilité du béton.


 En revanche, les granulats à taille unique ou à granulométrie uniforme sont principalement constitués de particules de même taille, ce qui est évident à partir d'une courbe de granulométrie presque verticale. Bien que ces granulats offrent une bonne perméabilité, ils manquent de stabilité et sont généralement utilisés dans des applications spécifiques comme les enduits de gravillons dans les chaussées.


 Les granulats à granulométrie discontinue se caractérisent par l'absence de certaines fractions granulométriques, ce qui fait qu'une partie importante des particules passe à travers deux tamis très différents. Il en résulte une courbe de granulométrie avec une section presque horizontale, indiquant l'absence de tailles intermédiaires. En raison des tailles de matériaux manquantes, ces granulats peuvent entraîner des problèmes de stabilité du béton.


 Les granulats à granulométrie ouverte, manquant de tailles plus petites qui remplissent les vides entre les granulats plus gros, présentent une courbe de granulométrie plate avec des valeurs minimales dans la plage de tailles plus petites. Ces granulats sont très perméables mais ont une stabilité réduite.

Types of Aggregate Grading

Aggregate grading describes the particle size distribution in a sample of aggregate. It is important for making a concrete mix that has enough strength, reasonable workability, and minimal segregation. The right grading also helps concrete stay economical.

There are four main types of aggregate gradation: well-graded, uniformly graded, gap-graded, and open-graded. Each type has a different pattern on a gradation curve, which shows how particle sizes are spread across sieve sizes. These patterns help explain how the aggregate will behave in concrete or other uses.

Well-graded aggregate contains a full range of particle sizes. The sizes fit together to form a dense matrix with minimal voids, and the gradation curve is smooth and continuous. This type of grading gives good workability and stability.

Uniformly graded, or one-sized, aggregate is made mostly of particles of the same size. Its gradation curve is nearly vertical. This type allows good permeability, but it does not provide much stability. It is used in specific applications such as chip seals in pavements.

Gap-graded aggregate is missing certain size fractions. As a result, a large amount of material may pass through two very different sieves, and the gradation curve shows a nearly horizontal section where sizes are missing. Because intermediate sizes are absent, this type can create stability problems in concrete.

Open-graded aggregate is missing the smaller sizes that would fill the spaces between larger particles. Its gradation curve is flat and shows very low values in the small size range. Open-graded aggregate is highly permeable, but it has reduced stability.
