Les premières étapes de la manipulation du béton, y compris la mise en place, le compactage et la finition, sont grandement affectées par sa maniabilité, qui fait référence à la facilité avec laquelle le mélange peut être déplacé et travaillé tout au long du processus.
La maniabilité fait référence à l’énergie interne nécessaire pour surmonter diverses résistances afin d’obtenir un compactage complet du béton.
Un compactage minutieux du béton assure une meilleure densité et, à son tour, gagne en résistance.
Une teneur en vide de 5 % dans le béton peut réduire sa résistance à la compression jusqu’à 30 %.
Un bon béton maniable assure l’expulsion d’un maximum de vides de sa masse.
La facilité avec laquelle le béton peut s’écouler s’appelle la consistance.
Le béton avec une teneur en humidité plus élevée dans certaines limites est généralement plus facile à travailler que les mélanges plus secs.
Cependant, les bétons de consistance identique peuvent présenter des différences de maniabilité.

Il est à noter que même une teneur en vide de 5 % dans le béton peut réduire sa résistance jusqu'à 30 %. Cela signifie qu'un béton hautement ouvrable est avantageux car il facilite l'expulsion des vides, améliorant ainsi l'intégrité structurelle du produit fini.


 La consistance du béton, qui fait référence à sa facilité d'écoulement, est directement liée à sa teneur en humidité. Les mélanges de béton ayant une teneur en humidité plus élevée sont généralement plus ouvrables que les mélanges plus secs. Concrete workability is the ease with which fresh concrete can be mixed, placed, compacted, and finished. It is an important property during construction because it affects how well the material moves into position and how easily it can be shaped.

Workability depends on the internal friction within the mix and the resistance it meets from molds and reinforcements. When the ingredients resist one another, concrete moves less easily. The same is true when it has to pass around barriers in the formwork or around steel reinforcement.

Good workability also supports effective compaction, which helps concrete become denser and stronger. Even a void content of 5 percent can reduce concrete strength by up to 30 percent. High workability helps air and other voids escape, which improves the strength and durability of the finished structure.

Consistency is closely related to workability. Consistency describes how easily concrete flows, and it is linked to moisture content. Mixes with more moisture are usually more workable than drier mixes, but concrete with the same consistency can still have different workability depending on its composition and the conditions in which it is used.
