Les archées sont procaryotes et forment un domaine différent de celui des bactéries et des eucaryotes. Ils manquent de peptidoglycane dans leurs parois cellulaires. Certaines archées contiennent un polymère structurellement similaire appelé pseudomuréine. Leurs membranes cellulaires contiennent uniquement des lipides isoprénoïdes liés à l’éther, contrairement aux isoprénoïdes liés aux esters que l’on trouve dans d’autres formes de vie. Cependant, les molécules d’archées comme les ARN polymérases et les facteurs d’initiation de la transcription ressemblent à celles des eucaryotes. Ils peuvent prospérer dans des environnements extrêmes comme les sources chaudes, les salines, les cheminées hydrothermales et les eaux acides, ou dans des environnements modérés comme le sol et le corps humain. Les archées présentent diverses stratégies métaboliques, comme la chimioorganotrophie, où les composés organiques comme le glucose sont oxydés, et la chimiolithotrophie, où les composés inorganiques comme le soufre et l’ammoniac sont oxydés pour produire de l’énergie. Archaea are a unique domain of life with cell structures and metabolic strategies that set them apart from bacteria and eukaryotes. They were named after the Archaean eon and are important for understanding both early life and modern biotechnology.

One key feature of archaea is their membrane chemistry. Their membranes contain ether-linked isoprenoid lipids, which help them stay stable in extreme conditions such as high heat and chemical stress. Archaea also have RNA polymerases that are more complex than bacterial versions and are functionally similar to eukaryotic RNA polymerases. This similarity extends to DNA replication, transcription, and translation, which is why archaea are often seen as a bridge between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

Archaeal cell walls are also different from those of bacteria. They do not contain peptidoglycan. Instead, their walls may include pseudomurein, proteins, glycoproteins such as S-layers, or mixtures of these materials. Pseudomurein is structurally similar to bacterial peptidoglycan, but it is not the same substance.

Archaea live in many environments. Some species thrive in extreme places such as hot springs, hydrothermal vents, acidic waters, and alkaline lakes. Others live in soils and in the human microbiome. Some archaea also live in symbiosis with other organisms. For example, archaea in the gut microbiota of ruminants help digestion by breaking down complex organic compounds.

Their metabolism is equally diverse. Some archaea are chemoorganotrophs, meaning they get energy by oxidizing organic compounds such as glucose and acetate. Others are chemolithotrophs, meaning they use inorganic molecules such as hydrogen, sulfur, or ammonia for energy. This flexibility also includes the use of methane in some species, which helps archaea survive in extreme habitats.

Methanogens are archaea that produce methane. They are important in carbon cycling and also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Some archaea can also carry out anaerobic methane oxidation, which helps control methane levels in certain ecosystems.

The stability and metabolic flexibility of archaea make them useful in industry and environmental science. Enzymes from extremophilic archaea are thermostable, so they work well in biotechnology. A well-known example is DNA polymerase used in PCR. Archaea also support biofuel production, including cellulosic ethanol generation, and they can help in bioremediation by breaking down pollutants under extreme conditions.

Archaea are also important for evolutionary biology. They share traits with both bacteria and eukaryotes, and their place in the tree of life offers clues about the last universal common ancestor and the origin of eukaryotes. Studying archaea helps scientists understand early cellular evolution and develop new scientific tools and processes.
