Des études récentes ont révélé trois nouveaux embranchements dans le domaine des Archaea : Thaumarchaeota, Nanoarchaeota et Korarchaeota. Les Thaumarchaeota, comme Nitrosopumilus maritimus, sont des mésophiles qui prospèrent dans des environnements modérés et que l’on trouve couramment dans les habitats terrestres et aquatiques. Ils sont cruciaux pour le cycle de l’azote car ils peuvent oxyder l’ammoniac en nitrate, un nutriment essentiel pour les producteurs primaires comme les plantes. L’embranchement des Nanoarchaeota a actuellement un seul membre Nanoarchaeum equitans. Il est hyperthermophile et se trouve dans les évents chauds des sous-marins. Il possède le plus petit génome d’archée séquencé à ce jour et possède des gènes pour la réparation, mais il n’en a pas pour la biosynthèse des macromolécules. Les capacités métaboliques limitées de Nanoarchaeum entraînent sa relation parasitaire avec l’archéon Ignicoccus. Korarchaeota comme Korarchaeum cryptofilum représentent une ancienne lignée d’archées qui a divergé tôt des embranchements majeurs, Euryarchaeota et Crenarchaeota, comme en témoigne l’analyse phylogénétique et l’analyse des marqueurs génétiques. Généralement hyperthermophiles, les membres de Korarchaeota habitent des sources chaudes, contribuant au flux d’énergie et au recyclage des nutriments.

Les Thaumarchaeota, comme Nitrosopumilus maritimus, sont des arch&#233;es m&#233;sophiles qui vivent dans des environnements mod&#233;r&#233;s tels que les sols, les lacs et les zones marines. Cet organisme poss&#232;de le plus petit g&#233;nome microbien s&#233;quenc&#233; &#224; ce jour, avec une taille de 0,49 Mb. Bien que son g&#233;nome conserve les g&#232;nes n&#233;cessaires &#224; la r&#233;paration de l&#8217;ADN, il lui manque presque tous les g&#232;nes essentiels &#224; la biosynth&#232;se de macromol&#233;cules telles que les lipides et les acides amin&#233;s. Il est donc m&#233;taboliquement d&#233;pendant de son h&#244;te, Ignicoccus, une autre arch&#233;e thermophile.

Chaque phylum remplit des fonctions &#233;cologiques sp&#233;cifiques et poss&#232;de des traits &#233;volutifs distincts, allant du cycle des nutriments dans des milieux mod&#233;r&#233;s &#224; la parasitose et &#224; la survie dans des environnements extr&#234;mes. L&#8217;&#233;tude de ces phylums approfondit notre connaissance de la vie microbienne et des m&#233;canismes qui permettent aux arch&#233;es de prosp&#233;rer dans une grande vari&#233;t&#233; de niches environnementales.

Archaea are one of the three domains of life, and their diversity includes species that live in both extreme and moderate environments. For a long time, most known archaea were grouped into two major phyla: Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota. Recent molecular studies have added three more phyla to this picture: Thaumarchaeota, Nanoarchaeota, and Korarchaeota.

Thaumarchaeota are mesophilic archaea, which means they live in moderate conditions. They are found in soils, lakes, and marine regions. A well-known example is Nitrosopumilus maritimus. These archaea help drive the nitrogen cycle by oxidizing ammonia into nitrate, an important step called nitrification. This process helps provide nitrate for primary producers such as plants and algae.

Nanoarchaeota are much more minimal in structure. Members of this phylum have very small genomes, around 0.5 Mb, and the group is currently represented by a single species, Nanoarchaeum equitans. It is a hyperthermophile, so it lives in very hot places such as submarine hydrothermal vents. Its genome is the smallest microbial genome sequenced so far at 0.49 Mb. It still has genes for DNA repair, but it lacks most genes needed to make macromolecules like lipids and amino acids. Because of this, it depends on its host, Ignicoccus, which is also a thermophilic archaeon.

Korarchaeota represent an ancient archaeal lineage. Korarchaeum cryptofilum is the example given for this phylum, and it diverged early from other major archaea such as Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota. Genetic and phylogenetic studies support this deep split in evolution. Korarchaeota are usually hyperthermophilic and live in high-temperature settings like hot springs. In these habitats, they contribute to energy flow and nutrient recycling and help maintain the stability of thermal ecosystems.

Together, Thaumarchaeota, Nanoarchaeota, and Korarchaeota show how broad archaeal diversity really is. Their traits range from nutrient cycling in moderate environments to parasitism and survival in extreme heat. Studying these phyla helps explain how archaea adapt to different niches and what their evolution reveals about microbial life.
