Les algues sont des photoautotrophes eucaryotes dépourvus de xylème et de phloème. Il peut s’agir d’organismes unicellulaires, de chaînes filamenteuses ou multicellulaires. Les algues se reproduisent à la fois de manière asexuée et sexuée. La reproduction asexuée chez les algues unicellulaires se produit par mitose, suivie d’une cytokinèse. Pendant ce temps, les algues multicellulaires se reproduisent de manière asexuée par fragmentation, où chaque fragment se développe en un nouvel organisme. Algae are simple eukaryotic photoautotrophs that live in many habitats and show a wide range of body forms. They contain chlorophyll and carry out oxygenic photosynthesis. They belong to the kingdom Archaeplastida, which also includes red and green algae and land plants. Unlike other protists with chloroplasts from secondary endosymbiosis, red and green algae came from primary endosymbiotic events.

Algae can look very different from one another. Some are large brown kelp in coastal waters, while others appear as green scum in puddles or as stains on rocks and soil. They may be unicellular, form filamentous chains, or grow as a thallus, which is the body of a multicellular alga. Some species can also cause food poisoning.

Although algae were once classified as plants, they are not true plants. They lack embryos and do not have roots or stems. Their classification is still changing as DNA and structural studies refine groupings within super clades. Most algae are found in water, but many also live in soil, on tree surfaces, and in unusual places such as the fur of South American sloths and polar bears, as long as moisture is available.

Water is important for algae in several ways. It gives physical support, helps reproduction, and allows nutrients to diffuse. Most algae live in cool temperate waters, but some brown algae, such as Sargassum, form large floating mats in the subtropical Sargasso Sea. Other species thrive in Antarctic waters. Most algae are also found in ocean environments, and their distribution depends on nutrient availability, light wavelengths, and surfaces for growth.

Large multicellular algae, often called seaweeds, have a thallus with different parts. The holdfast anchors the alga, the stipe is stemlike and often hollow, and the blades are leaflike. Unlike vascular plants, algae do not have xylem or phloem. They absorb nutrients directly from water, and the stipe is not lignified or strong enough to support the body on its own. In many cases, the surrounding water supports the thallus. Some algae also float with gas-filled pneumatocysts.

Algae reproduce both asexually and sexually. Multicellular algae with thalli or filamentous forms can reproduce by fragmentation, where each piece grows into a new organism. Unicellular algae divide by mitosis and then cytokinesis to make two genetically identical cells. Sexual reproduction also occurs, and in some species it follows several asexual generations. Some algae show alternation of generations, where offspring from sexual reproduction reproduce asexually before a later generation reproduces sexually.

Algae include many phyla and are classified using rRNA sequences, structures, pigments, and other traits. Most are photosynthetic, and chlorophyll a plus accessory pigments give them their different colors. However, some groups, such as oomycotes, are chemoheterotrophs rather than photosynthetic. Photosynthetic algae usually live in the photic zone, where there is enough light for photosynthesis.
