Question 1

What are conjugated proteins and how do they differ from simple proteins?

Accepted Answer

Conjugated proteins form complexes with nonprotein components such as nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids, unlike simple proteins composed solely of amino acids. These protein-nonprotein combinations enable diverse biological functions. Examples include nucleoproteins, glycoproteins, lipoproteins, and hemoproteins, each serving specialized roles in cells and tissues.

Question 2

What are nucleoproteins and where are they found in cells?

Accepted Answer

Nucleoproteins are conjugated proteins containing both proteins and nucleic acids. Deoxyribonucleoproteins (DNPs) contain DNA and are found in the nucleus, forming nucleosomes where DNA wraps around histone proteins. Ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) contain RNA and locate in both the nucleus and cytoplasm, including the spliceosome complex that processes gene transcripts.

Question 3

How do glycoproteins and proteoglycans differ in structure and function?

Accepted Answer

Glycoproteins contain short carbohydrate chains and are critical for immune function, as seen in antibodies. Proteoglycans consist of long repeating sugar units, often modified with functional groups, and are major components of extracellular matrix in cartilage, enabling frictionless joint motion. Both types involve carbohydrate-protein combinations but differ in carbohydrate size and biological roles.

Question 4

What is the structural difference between lipoproteins and proteolipids?

Accepted Answer

Lipoproteins are water-soluble complexes with a hydrophobic lipid core surrounded by a hydrophilic protein surface, facilitating cholesterol transport through blood. Proteolipids are water-insoluble complexes with hydrophobic amino acid residues attached to lipid molecules, abundant in brain tissues where they form insulating coatings that maintain normal motor functions.

Question 5

How does the spliceosome function as a ribonucleoprotein complex?

Accepted Answer

The spliceosome is a large ribonucleoprotein complex composed of five small nuclear RNPs (snRNPs) containing both RNA and protein, along with accessory cofactors. This complex removes undesired nucleotides from precursor gene transcripts, enabling proper gene expression. It represents a critical example of how protein-RNA interactions facilitate essential cellular processes.

Question 6

What role does heme play in hemoglobin as a conjugated protein?

Accepted Answer

Hemoglobin is a hemoprotein conjugated protein containing heme, a nonprotein component with a central iron atom. This iron atom binds and transports oxygen throughout the bloodstream, giving red blood cells their characteristic color. The heme-protein interaction demonstrates how nonprotein prosthetic groups enable specialized molecular transport functions.

Question 7

Why are lipoproteins important for cholesterol transport in the body?

Accepted Answer

Cholesterol is insoluble in blood and cannot travel freely through the bloodstream. Lipoproteins solve this problem by binding insoluble cholesterol to their hydrophobic lipid core, creating water-soluble complexes that facilitate transport from synthesis sites in the liver to other cells. When lipoprotein levels become too high, insoluble fractions can deposit in coronary arteries, causing stroke or heart attack.
