Airway Defense

Airway defense is the coordinated protection of the respiratory tract against inhaled particles, pathogens, and chemical irritants, helping maintain clear and functional airways. Physical barriers such as mucus and ciliated epithelial cells trap and transport contaminants toward the throat, while sensory receptors can trigger protective reflexes including coughing, sneezing, and altered breathing. Behavior also contributes through actions such as swallowing, clearing secretions, avoiding irritants, and adjusting breathing patterns. Together, these mechanisms limit airway injury and infection, and their disruption can increase vulnerability to respiratory disease or reveal how neural, sensory, and behavioral systems regulate breathing.

Defensive tactics are strategies companies employ to resist unwanted takeovers and protect their autonomy. These methods deter hostile bidders or improve acquisition terms, enabling companies to maintain control over their direction. Common strategies include the Poison Pill, Shark Repellent, Golden Parachute, and White Knight. The Poison Pill allows shareholders to purchase additional stock at a discount, diluting the acquirer’s stake and making the takeover more expensive. For instance,...

Source: Li, T., et al. Studying Effects of Cigarette Smoke on Pseudomonas Infection in Lung Epithelial Cells. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates how cigarette smoke extract weakens antimicrobial defense in lung epithelial cells by reducing AMP production, leading to increased bacterial invasion. The procedure measures intracellular bacterial load to assess the impact of smoke exposure on host-pathogen interactions.

The ex vivo organ culture allows investigation of biological processes in the context of the intact tissue architecture. Here, we introduce a method of ex vivo culture of the mouse colon, which can be used to study innate immunity and antimicrobial host defense in the intestine.

Defense Against Bacterial Pathogens

The human immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body against bacterial infections. It consists of various immune cells, each playing a specific role in the defense mechanism. Phagocytes Phagocytes are the frontline soldiers of the immune system. They include neutrophils and macrophages. Neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cell and are quickly mobilized to the site of infection. Macrophages are larger cells that patrol...

Defense Mechanism Against Infection

Natural flora, body system defenses, and inflammation are natural barriers of the body against infectious agents regardless of previous exposure. Normal floras of the human body refer to the microbial population that colonizes the skin and mucous membranes. In addition, many body organ systems have unique defenses against infection. The skin is an intact, multilayered surface preventing invasion by microorganisms unless impaired. Mucous membranes lining the mouth, nose, and eyelids are barriers...
