Children Physical Activity

Children’s physical activity is any bodily movement performed by children that increases energy expenditure, including active play, sports, walking, and school-based movement. It occurs when skeletal muscles contract to produce movement, while intensity, duration, frequency, and environmental conditions shape its physiological and behavioral effects. Regular activity supports motor development, physical fitness, emotional well-being, attention, and healthy behavior patterns, whereas sedentary time reduces opportunities for movement and skill practice. In behavioral research, studying children’s activity helps identify how family routines, peer interactions, schools, neighborhoods, and digital media influence participation and informs interventions that promote active lifestyles across development.

Determining Soil-transmitted Helminth Infection Status and Physical Fitness of School-aged Children

Chronic infection with soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) causes malabsorption, stunting, and wasting in the growing child. Hence, it is plausible that these infections also reduce the physical fitness of children. Here, we visualize two techniques for the diagnosis of STHs and the 20-meter shuttle run test for assessing children's physical fitness.

Measurement of autonomic nervous system activity usually confines the researcher and participant to the laboratory, which may provide an intimidating environment to children. The VU University Ambulatory Monitoring System (VU-AMS) device can record cardiac autonomic control in any setting. The VU-AMS proved very amenable to testing in children.

Metacognitive Development: How Children Estimate Their Memory

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Human memory is fallible, and people often cannot accurately recall what they have seen or heard. Adults are aware of their limited memory capacity, so they use strategies, such as rehearsal and mnemonic devices, to improve their recall of important information. Because adults understand the limits of memory, they know it makes more sense to write down the items on their shopping list rather than to try to...

Assessment of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometers and Oxygen Consumption

2025

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.
