Device Automation

Device automation is the use of sensors, software, and control hardware to operate instruments or equipment with limited manual intervention, improving consistency, efficiency, and reproducibility. In bioengineering systems, sensors monitor variables such as temperature, pressure, flow rate, or cell-culture conditions; a controller compares these measurements with target values and directs actuators to adjust the device through a feedback loop. Automated platforms can regulate bioreactors, microfluidic systems, laboratory instruments, and biomedical devices while recording process data for analysis and quality control. These capabilities support standardized experiments, high-throughput workflows, real-time monitoring, and more reliable development of engineered tissues, therapeutics, and diagnostic technologies.

This protocol demonstrates how to achieve femto molar detection sensitivity of proteins in 10 µL of whole blood within 30 min. This can be achieved by using electrospun nanofibrous mats integrated in a lab-on-a-disc, which offers high surface area as well as effective mixing and washing for enhanced signal-to-noise ratio.

Here, an automated workflow to perform modular DNA "device" assembly using a modular cloning DNA assembly method on liquid-handling robots is presented. The protocol uses an intuitive software tool for generating liquid handler picklists for combinatorial DNA device library generation, which we demonstrate using two liquid handling platforms.
