Neurovascular Flow Characterization

Neurovascular Flow Characterization is the quantitative study of blood movement through the brain’s vessels, providing insight into how vascular structure and hemodynamics support neural function. It combines measurements of flow velocity, direction, and distribution with information about vessel geometry and network connectivity to describe perfusion and identify changes in transport through the neurovascular system. In bioengineering, these analyses support the design and evaluation of vascular models, microfluidic platforms, imaging methods, and computational simulations. They also help researchers investigate cerebrovascular disease, assess engineered tissues, and understand how altered blood flow may affect brain health and therapeutic outcomes.

This manuscript describes a detailed protocol for phenotypic and quantitative analysis of resident macrophages from rat kidneys by flow cytometry. The resulting stained cells can be also used for other applications, including cell sorting, gene expression analysis or functional studies, thus increasing the information obtained in the experimental model.

There is growing interest in the quantitative characterization of intestinal lymphocytes owing to increasing recognition that these cells play a critical role in a variety of intestinal and systemic diseases. In this protocol, we describe how to isolate single cell populations from different small-intestinal compartments for subsequent flow cytometric characterization.
