Surface Speckling Pattern

A surface speckling pattern is a random, high-contrast marking applied to a material so its deformation can be measured optically. In bioengineering, digital image correlation compares sequential images of the pattern as a tissue, scaffold, implant, or biomaterial is loaded, tracking speckle movement to calculate displacement, strain, and local mechanical behavior. Pattern quality, including feature size, contrast, adhesion, and coverage, directly affects measurement accuracy. This noncontact approach helps characterize soft and compliant biological materials, identify strain concentrations, evaluate engineered tissues and devices, and connect surface mechanics with structure, function, and performance.
