Three-dimensional Migration

Three-dimensional migration is the movement of cells through spatially complex environments that more closely resemble native tissues than flat laboratory surfaces. Cells navigate extracellular matrices by coordinating actin cytoskeletal remodeling, adhesion to matrix components, contractile forces, and, in some settings, proteolytic remodeling of surrounding material; chemical or mechanical cues can guide this movement. In bioengineering, three-dimensional migration assays use hydrogels, porous scaffolds, organoids, and engineered tissue models to measure how cells invade, align, and respond to their microenvironment. These systems support research on wound healing, cancer invasion, immune-cell trafficking, tissue regeneration, and the design of biomaterials that regulate cell behavior.

An Introduction to Cell Motility and Migration

2023

Cell motility and migration play important roles in both normal biology and in disease. On one hand, migration allows cells to generate complex tissues and organs during development, but on the other hand, the same mechanisms are used by tumor cells to move and spread in a process known as cancer metastasis. One of the primary cellular machineries that make cell movement possible is an intracellular network of myosin and actin molecules, together known as “actomyosin”, which creates a...
