Alternative Animal Models

Alternative animal models are nontraditional research organisms used in place of, or alongside, standard laboratory species to investigate biological processes, disease, development, and environmental responses. They work by leveraging conserved genes, cellular pathways, and physiological traits while offering practical advantages such as rapid reproduction, genetic tractability, transparent embryos, or adaptation to specialized environments. Models including zebrafish, fruit flies, nematodes, amphibians, and invertebrates can reveal mechanisms of development, host-pathogen interaction, toxicity, and regeneration, helping researchers test hypotheses efficiently and reduce reliance on mammals. Their findings can guide mammalian studies, conservation research, and the selection of models best suited to specific scientific questions.

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Introduction to C. elegans The nematode (roundworm) Caenorhabditis elegans, commonly known as C. elegans, is a widely used non-vertebrate animal model for studying fundamental biological processes. Because many cellular and...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are widely used as an alternative vertebrate model organism in biomedical research. Their genetic similarity to humans, rapid development, and suitability for large-scale studies make them valuable tools...

Utilizing an Orally Dissolving Strip for Pharmacological and Toxicological Studies: A Simple and Humane Alternative to Oral Gavage for Animals

2016

The following protocol describes a novel method for chronic oral drug administration using an orally dissolving strip (ODS) in lieu of the more commonly used oral gavage method. We demonstrate that preclinical, oral drug delivery using the ODS method represents a safe, convenient, and humane alternative to oral gavage.
