Biochemical Pathway

A biochemical pathway is a linked series of enzyme-catalyzed reactions that transforms molecules within a cell, helping sustain life and regulate cellular activity. Each step modifies a substrate into a product, and the resulting product can become the substrate for the next reaction; pathway flux is often controlled by enzyme activity, substrate availability, and feedback inhibition. Biochemical pathways include processes such as energy production, biosynthesis, and signal transduction, connecting molecular reactions to cell growth, maintenance, and response. Mapping these pathways helps biologists interpret metabolism, identify disease-related disruptions, and develop strategies for studying or modifying cellular function.

Functional Complementation Analysis (FCA): A Laboratory Exercise Designed and Implemented to Supplement the Teaching of Biochemical Pathways

2016

The validation of enzymatic activities involved in biochemical pathways can be elucidated using functional complementation analysis (FCA). Described in this manuscript is the FCA assay demonstrating the enzymatic activity of enzymes involved in the metabolism of amino acids, bacterial stringent response and bacterial peptidoglycan biosynthesis.

This article provides a detailed and visual description of a methodology for collecting and measuring biochemical inflammatory and nociceptive mediators at the surgical wound site following cesarean delivery. This human bioassay has been used to determine correlations between wound and serum cytokine concentrations and drug-mediated changes in wound cytokines, chemokines and neuropetides.

C4 Pathway and CAM

2019

Most plants use the C3 pathway for carbon fixation. However, some plants, such as sugar cane, corn, and cacti that grow in hot conditions, use alternative pathways to fix carbon and conserve energy loss due to photorespiration. Photorespiration is the process that occurs when the oxygen concentration is high. Under such conditions, the rubisco enzyme in the Calvin cycle binds O2 instead of CO2, which halts photosynthesis and consumes energy. C4 Pathway The C4 pathway is used by plants such as...
