Postoperative Contrast Analysis

Postoperative contrast analysis is the interpretation of contrast-enhanced medical images obtained after surgery to distinguish expected healing from residual or recurrent disease, making it valuable in cancer research and clinical assessment. Contrast agents alter signal or X-ray attenuation in tissues according to factors such as blood flow, vascular permeability, and tissue composition; researchers compare enhancement patterns with surgical anatomy and baseline or follow-up scans. This analysis can help characterize margins, treatment response, complications, and suspected recurrence, while standardized timing and image interpretation are important because inflammation and scar tissue may mimic tumor. It also supports studies of imaging biomarkers and longitudinal patient monitoring.

Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy

Phase-Contrast Microscopes In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...

Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging for Rapid III-V Heteroepitaxial Characterization

2015

The use of electron channeling contrast imaging in a scanning electron microscope to characterize defects in III-V/Si heteroexpitaxial thin films is described. This method yields similar results to plan-view transmission electron microscopy, but in significantly less time due to lack of required sample preparation.
