Splenectomy Procedure

Splenectomy is the surgical removal of the spleen, an organ that filters blood, supports immune responses, and stores platelets; it may be performed to treat disease or obtain tissue for investigation. During the procedure, surgeons remove the spleen through an open or minimally invasive approach, then control blood vessels and assess nearby structures to limit bleeding and other complications. In cancer research, splenectomy procedures can provide specimens for analyzing tumor involvement, immune-cell interactions, and blood-related abnormalities, while clinical studies use them to evaluate how loss of splenic function affects infection risk, inflammation, and treatment outcomes. Careful patient selection and postoperative monitoring are essential.

2026

This protocol describes a robot-assisted partial splenectomy for a benign splenic tumor. The robotic approach optimizes spleen preservation by enhancing surgical precision, minimizing blood loss, and improving postoperative outcomes. Key surgical steps include meticulous splenic hilum dissection, selective vascular ligation, intraoperative ultrasonography, and controlled parenchymal transection.

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which child was...

With the rapid advancement of laparoscopic techniques, the minimally invasive benefits of laparoscopic splenectomy combined with pericardial devascularization have become increasingly evident. In this context, we present a protocol for performing laparoscopic splenectomy alongside pericardial devascularization to treat hypersplenism and esophageal variceal hemorrhage resulting from portal hypertension.

Handwashing II: Pre-procedure and Initial Procedure Steps

The pre-procedure steps of handwashing include removing jewelry and rolling up sleeves. However, many organizations allow staff to wear wedding rings. The hand washing procedure itself includes the following steps. First, cover cuts, if any, on hands with a waterproof dressing. Cuts and abrasions can become contaminated with bacteria hindering the ability to clean the area thoroughly. In addition, repeated hand washing can worsen an injury. The nails must be short and clean, without nail paint...
