Annulenes

Annulenes are monocyclic hydrocarbons containing alternating double bonds, and they provide important models for understanding conjugation, aromaticity, and molecular structure in chemistry. Their π electrons can circulate around the ring when adjacent p orbitals overlap; according to Hückel’s rule, a planar, fully conjugated annulene with 4n + 2 π electrons can exhibit aromatic stabilization, whereas systems with 4n electrons may be antiaromatic or adopt nonplanar shapes to reduce instability. Studying annulenes through synthesis, spectroscopy, and structural analysis helps explain ring strain, bond-length patterns, and magnetic behavior, supporting broader research in organic synthesis, materials chemistry, and molecular design.
