Battery Degradation

Battery degradation is the gradual loss of a battery’s capacity, power capability, and efficiency during storage and use, driven by chemical and structural changes in its cells. In rechargeable batteries, repeated charge-discharge cycles can promote electrolyte decomposition and solid-electrolyte interphase growth, consume cyclable lithium, cause electrode cracking, and, under unfavorable charging conditions, produce lithium plating; elevated temperature and deep cycling can accelerate these reactions. Understanding degradation helps chemists distinguish calendar aging from cycle aging, improve electrode and electrolyte formulations, set safer operating conditions, and develop diagnostics and models that extend service life in electric vehicles, electronics, and grid storage.

A battery is a galvanic cell that is used as a source of electrical power for specific applications. Modern batteries exist in a multitude of forms to accommodate various applications, from tiny button batteries such as those that power wristwatches to the very large batteries used to supply backup energy to municipal power grids. Some batteries are designed for single-use applications and cannot be recharged (primary cells), while others are based on conveniently reversible cell reactions that...

A test battery (IMAP) for performing an in-depth assessment of auditory and cognitive abilities contributing to listening skills is described. It is quick to administer, child-friendly and free from linguistic confounds. Stimulus generation and protocol management are controlled via a software platform (IHR-STAR) to ensure replicable procedures.

Regulated Protein Degradation

2020

It is vital to regulate the activity of enzymatic as well as non-enzymatic proteins inside the cell. This can be achieved either through creating a balance between their rate of synthesis and degradation or regulating the intrinsic activity of the protein. Both these regulation mechanisms play an essential role in the normal functioning of cells. Protein degradation plays two important roles in the cells. It helps to protect cells from misfolded or damaged proteins before they lead to a...

Proteins: From Genes to Degradation

Within a biological system, the DNA encodes the RNA, and the nucleotide sequence in the RNA further defines the amino acid sequence in the protein. This is referred to as “The Central Dogma of Molecular Biology” - a term coined by Francis Crick. Central dogma is a firm principle in biology that defines the flow of genetic information within any life form. The two fundamental steps in central dogma are - transcription and translation. Transcription is the synthesis of RNA molecules by RNA...
