Cold Trap

A cold trap is a cooled device that captures condensable vapors from a gas stream, most often in a vacuum system, before they reach downstream equipment. By maintaining a surface at a temperature below the vapor’s condensation or freezing point, the trap converts volatile compounds into liquids or solids that remain in the vessel. In chemistry, cold traps protect vacuum pumps from corrosive solvents, reduce contamination, and help recover or separate volatile materials during rotary evaporation, distillation, and freeze-drying. Trap temperature and coolant selection determine collection efficiency, while proper handling supports safer operation and accurate experimental results.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA A Dean-Stark trap is a special piece of glassware, which allows the collection of water during a reaction through an azeotropic distillation. The desire to collect water from a reaction can have various reasons. It can drive the equilibria in reactions, where water is formed as a byproduct. According to Le Chatelier's principle, a change in temperature, pressure, concentration, or volume will cause...

Social Traps

Social traps are negative situations where people get caught in a direction or relationship that later proves to be unpleasant, with no easy way to back out of or avoid. The concept was orignally introduced by John Platt who applied psychology to Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons", where in New England herd owners could let their cattle graze in the common ground. This situation seems like a good idea, but an individual could have an advantage. If they owned more cows, the larger...
