Copper Anode

A copper anode is a copper electrode at which oxidation occurs, making it an important component of electrochemical cells and industrial metal-processing systems. During operation, copper atoms at the anode release electrons and enter the electrolyte as Cu²⁺ ions through the reaction Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻; the electrons travel through an external circuit toward the cathode. In electrolytic refining, an impure copper anode dissolves while copper ions are reduced and deposited as high-purity copper on the cathode, leaving less reactive impurities as anode sludge. This process supports copper purification, metal recovery, electroplating, and studies of electrode reactions.

Source: Okamoto, A., et al. Self-standing Electrochemical Set-up to Enrich Anode-respiring Bacteria On-site. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the use of an on-site electrochemical system to enrich anode-respiring bacteria (ARB) from natural reservoirs. A redox gradient is established by placing the anode in oxygen-free deep water and the cathode in oxygen-rich surface water. ARB form biofilms and transfer electrons to the anode, which flows to the cathode, where oxygen is reduced,...

Here, we present a Caenorhabditis elegans-specific assay designed to evaluate changes in copper aversion behavior and the ability to locate a common food source, as the organism progresses from a well-fed to starved nutritional state.

The Effect of Anodization Parameters on the Aluminum Oxide Dielectric Layer of Thin-Film Transistors

2020

Anodization parameters for growth of the aluminum-oxide dielectric layer of zinc-oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) are varied to determine the effects on the electrical parameter responses. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is applied to a Plackett-Burman design of experiments (DOE) to determine the manufacturing conditions that result in optimized device performance.

The preparation and exfoliation of CaCuSi4O10 and BaCuSi4O10 are described. Upon stirring in hot water, CaCuSi4O10 spontaneously exfoliates into monolayers, whereas BaCuSi4O10 requires ultrasonication in organic solvents. Near infrared (NIR) imaging illustrates the NIR emission properties of these materials, and aqueous dispersions of these nanomaterials are useful for solution processing.
