Ignition Wire Assembly

An ignition wire assembly is a set of insulated high-voltage cables and connectors that carries electrical energy from an ignition coil or distributor to spark plugs, where it initiates combustion in a spark-ignition engine. Its conductive core transmits short voltage pulses, while polymer insulation prevents leakage and protects against heat, oil, vibration, and electrical arcing; engineered resistance can also reduce electromagnetic interference. The chemistry of the conductor, insulation, and terminal materials influences conductivity, dielectric strength, thermal stability, and long-term corrosion resistance. Studying these assemblies helps relate materials selection and degradation to ignition reliability, engine performance, emissions, and electrical-fault diagnosis.

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Hot-wire anemometers have a very short time-response, which makes them ideal to measure rapidly fluctuating phenomena such as turbulent flows. The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of hot-wire anemometry.

Design Example: Automobile Ignition System

2024

The automobile's ignition system plays a vital role by ensuring the timely ignition of the fuel-air mixture in each cylinder. This ignition is facilitated by a spark plug, which is composed of two electrodes separated by an air gap. A spark forms across this air gap when a substantial voltage is generated between the electrodes, leading to the ignition of the fuel. One can generate a large voltage using a car battery of 12 volts with the help of inductors. Inductors are known for opposing rapid...

Washing, Drying, and Ignition of Precipitates

After filtration, the precipitate is washed to remove coprecipitated impurities and any remaining mother liquor. Colloidal precipitates, such as silver chloride, are washed with an electrolyte (such as dilute nitric acid) to prevent the peptization of the precipitate. In the case of slightly soluble precipitates, the wash solution contains a common ion to reduce solubility. Lead sulfate, which is slightly soluble in water, is washed with dilute sulfuric acid. Similarly, wash solutions may be...
