Like Dissolves Like

Like dissolves like is a chemistry principle stating that substances with similar polarity and intermolecular forces tend to dissolve one another more readily. Polar solutes dissolve effectively in polar solvents because they can form dipole-dipole interactions or hydrogen bonds, while nonpolar solutes mix more readily with nonpolar solvents through dispersion forces; large differences in these interactions reduce solubility. This principle helps predict whether a substance will dissolve in water, oils, or organic solvents and guides solvent selection in extraction, recrystallization, chromatography, and chemical formulation. Understanding solubility also supports the separation, purification, and practical handling of chemical compounds.

Dissolved Oxygen in Surface Water

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Dissolved oxygen (DO) measurements calculate the amount of gaseous oxygen dissolved in surface water, which is important to all oxygen-breathing life in river ecosystems, including fish species preferred for human consumption (e.g. bluegill and bass), as well as decomposer species critical to the recycling of biogeochemical materials in the system. The oxygen dissolved in lakes, rivers, and oceans is crucial for the...

A Simple Approach to Manipulate Dissolved Oxygen for Animal Behavior Observations

Cited by 1 •

2016

This article describes a simple and reproducible protocol to manipulate dissolved oxygen conditions in a laboratory setting for animal behavior studies. This protocol may be used in both teaching and research laboratory settings to evaluate organismal response of macroinvertebrates, fishes, or amphibians to changes in dissolved oxygen concentration.

Understanding Dissolved Organic Matter Biogeochemistry Through In Situ Nutrient Manipulations in Stream Ecosystems

Here, we present small core incubations for the measurement of sediment-water gas and solute exchange. These will provide reliable measurements of sediment-water exchange that assess the role of sediment in influencing biological and biogeochemical processes in aquatic ecosystems.

VacuSIP, an Improved InEx Method for In Situ Measurement of Particulate and Dissolved Compounds Processed by Active Suspension Feeders

We introduce the VacuSIP, a simple, non-intrusive, and reliable method for clean and accurate point sampling of water. The system was developed and evaluated for the simultaneous collection of the water inhaled and exhaled by benthic suspension feeders in situ, to cleanly measure removal and excretion of particulate and dissolved compounds.
