Nanosheet Seed Layers

Nanosheet seed layers are ultrathin, sheet-like crystalline or nanostructured films that provide a defined surface for initiating the growth of another material. Their high surface area, exposed facets, and controlled surface chemistry promote precursor adsorption and lower the barrier for nucleation, enabling subsequent layers to form with improved orientation, continuity, or thickness control. In chemistry, researchers use nanosheet seed layers to guide thin-film deposition and the synthesis of layered nanomaterials, including structures with tailored interfaces and properties. These layers can improve reproducibility and help control morphology, making them valuable for studying crystal growth, catalysis, sensing, and nanoscale electronic materials.

The creation of functional microtissues within microfluidic devices requires the stabilization of cell phenotypes by adapting traditional cell culture techniques to the limited spatial dimensions in microdevices. Modification of collagen allows the layer-by-layer deposition of ultrathin collagen assemblies that can stabilize primary cells, such as hepatocytes, as microfluidic tissue models.

Seed Structure and Early Development of the Sporophyte

2020

Seed structures are composed of a protective seed coat surrounding a plant embryo, and a food store for the developing embryo. The embryo contains the precursor tissues for leaves, stem, and roots. The endosperm and cotyledons—seed leaves—act as the food reserves for the growing embryo. The embryo contains a double set of chromosomes, one set from each parent. Fertilization of the haploid egg by the haploid sperm gives rise to the zygote, which develops into the embryo. The endosperm is a...
